22 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
LUKE JENNER (THE RAPTURE) – “YOU’RE NOT ALONE”
While The Rapture are sporadically back in action, frontman Luke Jenner has a solo album, titled 1, that’ll be out May 15 via Manono Records. The first single is the understated, spare piano ballad that Luke colors with spacy synths. “You’re Not Alone is an invitation to more,” says Luke. “I made this record to bring together my family, friends and music into one thing. Not to hurt anyone, not to call anyone out. But simply to have a conversation with those who want to have a conversation with me. ”

ROISIN MURPHY – “MURPHY’S LAW”
The great Róisín Murphy is back with the latest in her series of 12″ single collaborations with Sheffield’s DJ Parrot and it’s the most groovy, in a 70’s way, thing she’s released since 2007’s Overpowered. “Murphy’s Law is our crack at a straight up, straightforward, no-frills, disco standard,” Róisín says. “Oh and it’s the story of my life. It’s about the nature of the past, it’s often a difficult thing to outrun but it can also be quite comforting… When is it valuable heritage, and when is it something that’s holding you back? Time and time again I return to Sheffield and my friends there. I go when I need to reconnect to a scene and to music that’s about something! And to feel the belonging.“

JAMES ELKINGTON – “LATE JIM’S LAMENT”
“No matter how I drive I know I can’t out-drive the hearse,” sings James Elkington on this jazzy, hip new single that’s all about his punctuality problem. “Cause it’s too late in my mind and getting later all the time.” James Elkington’s new album Ever-Roving Eye is out on April 3 via Paradise of Bachelors and should arrive on time.

KATIE MALCO – “ANIMAL”
Last year, UK singer/songwriter Katie Malco released the promising, grungy single “Creatures,” and now she announced that her new album Failures will come out June 5 via 6131 and released its second single, “Animal.” If you’re into stuff like, say, the new Ratboys and Soccer Mommy albums, you’ll probably wanna hear this too.

PEAKING LIGHTS – “EVP”
Psychedelic duo Peaking Lights will release their new album E S C S A P E on May 4 via Dekmantel, and it includes this haunting yet danceable new track.

KNWXLEDGE – “DON’T BE AFRAID”
Two new tracks (“dont be afraid” and “[bc] tm’s not promised,” presented as one continuous song) have surfaced from the new Knxwledge album 1988, and it’s yet another dose of Knxwledge’s expert blend of hip hop, jazz, psych, and soul.

JUNGLEPUSSY – “ARUGULA”
Over a crackingly, trippy beat from Sporting Life, Junglepussy delivers stream-of-consciousness rhymes about a relationship gone wrong. She also just did an interview with Erykah Badu that you can read over at Heroine Magazine.

SOUL GLO – “TOO LATE N*****, I”M TIRED”
Philly punks Soul Glo are back with a menacing, whiplash-inducing new single.

DARK MORPH (JONSI & CM VON HAUSSWOLFF) – “DARK WAVE”
Dark Morph — aka Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi and veteran composer CM Von Hausswolff (father of Anna) — are following last year’s self-titled debut album with Dark Morph II on May 1 via CM’s Pomperipossa Records. Its first single is the eerie, ambient “Dark Wave.”

LITTLE DRAGON – “ARE YOU FEELING SAD?” FT. KALI UCHIS
Little Dragon have a new album, New Me, Same Us on the way later this month, and their latest single from it features a guest appearance from Kali Uchis. “We are super excited Kali features on this track,” the band writes. “All of a sudden, at the end of last year, this version appeared in our emails like a beautiful Christmas gift. She put her twist on it and gave the track an amazing energy. Did we mention we also love her?!”

WARM DIGITS – “FEEL THE PANIC” (FT. THE LOVELY EGGS)
Cult UK duo The Lovely Eggs are one of the many artists to contribute to electronic group Warm Digits’ new album, Flight of Ideas. This one came natural as Warm Digits’ Andrew Hodson and The Lovely Eggs’ Holly have known each other since they were 15 and were in a band together way back when. “It was an absolute joy when he asked me to sing on the new Warm Digits album,” says Holly. “We’re big fans of their stuff anyway and it’s always lovely working with friends. I think we managed to come up with something which was definitely a Warm Digits track but with egg running right the way through the middle. Like one of those endless pork pies.”

HAPPYNESS – “SEEING EYE DOG”
London’s Hapyyness are back with their first new single in three years. “Seeing Eye Dog” finds them still in that catchy indie rock land between Pavement and Teenage Fanclub, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

TOPS – “COLDER & CLOSER”
Here’s another single and video from Montreal band TOPS’ forthcoming I Feel Alive that uses thermal imaging to play off the song’s title. “Jane had this really amazing vision where she hoped to convey the feeling of being immensely close to someone,” says video director Mashie Alam. “The choice of using thermal footage was made because we wanted to see, feel, and immerse ourselves into the varying temperatures of the body as it heats up, cools down, responds to touch, and feels alone. We created a movement composition that travels between a live action world and a thermal world! The idea was to visually explore the dynamic of being far (in the live action world) and being close (in the thermal world)! Eventually the juxtaposing jumps between the two worlds merge into an immersive thermal universe to evoke a climactic sense of closeness from where there is no return.” And you can dance to it.

LIGHTNING BUG – “THE ONELY ONES”
Lightning Bug, the Brooklyn shoegaze/dreampop group led by Audrey Kang, have signed to Fat Possum who will give her 2019 tape October Song a vinyl pressing on April 24. Along with this news comes with this lovely, somber new single.

S.G. GOODMAN – “THE WAY I TALK” (PROD. JIM JAMES)
Indie rock/Americana singer/songwriter S.G. Goodman will release her new Jim James-produced album Old Time Feeling on May 29 via Verve Forecast, and first single “The Way I Talk” is out now. “The song is inspired by the plight of the farming community in Kentucky where I grew up, where big business and the laws that protect them have vast control over my community,” S.G. said. “It is a scary thing calling into question the very thing that put food on my table and is putting food on my niece’s table (she plays the little girl in the video). Isn’t that the case for every person working a factory line who is afraid to unionize? Or a fast food employee afraid to take sick leave to care for her kid? We are all expected to be thankful, not question, and shut our mouths.”

GREEN CARNATION – “LEAVES OF YESTERYEAR”
Norwegian prog metal vets Green Carrnation (who were founded in 1990 by former Emperor bassist Tchort) will release their first new music in 14 years, Leaves of Yesteryear, on May 8 via Season of Mist. The title track is out now and it’s eight minutes of soaring, triumphant prog.

WUW – “EN SOUVENIR DES JOURS QUE NOUS N’AURONS PAS VÉCUS” (ft. BRUCE LAMONT)
Parisian experimental post-metal duo WuW have shared a new song from their upcoming album Rétablir L’Eternité (due March 27 via Prosthetic), and it features sax by the great Chicago avant-metal musician Bruce Lamont. You can read much more about it at Invisible Oranges.

THE STROPPIES – “HOLES IN EVERYTHING”
Australian indie rock band The Stroppies are following up last year’s terrific WOOSH! with the Look Alive EP which is out May 1 via Tough Love. First single “Holes in Everything” is a lovely bit of strummy pop a la The Clean.

CALEB LANDRY JONES – “ALL I AM IN YOU / THE BIG WORM”
Actor Caleb Landry Jones has appeared in Twin Peaks: The Return, Get Out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, X-Men: First Class, and more, and he’s also a musician; his debut solo album, The Mother Stone, is due out on May 1 via Sacred Bones. About his latest new single, “All I Am In You / The Big Worm,” he says, “the beat was inspired by Dale Hawkins’ ‘Susie-Q’. The first time I’d heard that pattern before…”

OHME – “3 2 4 3”
Chicago duo Ohmme have announced new album Fantasize Your Ghost which is out June 5 via Joyful Noise. Here’s the first single.

PORRIDGE RADIO – “CIRCLING”
Brighton, UK band Porridge Radio will release their new album Every Bad next week via Secretly Canadian and the three singles from it so far are making it very anticipated indeed. The latest is “Circling,” a woozy waltz that does sound like it’s spinning down the drain with a round-like refrain of “Everything’s fine.” Clearly things are not.

POTTERY – “TAKE YOUR TIME”
Montreal’s Pottery have shared a second single from their forthcoming debut album, Welcome to Bobby’s Motel which is out April 10 via Partisan. “Take Your Time” is taut, Devo-esque new wave, bouncy and propulsive with a shouty earworm chorus and some especially killer drumming.
