23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks.

As today is a Bandcamp First Friday, there are tons of new songs out today exclusive to Bandcamp, and we posted over 60 of those HERE. For even more of today’s new songs, scroll down…

SARAH JAROSZ – “ORANGE AND BLUE”

Sarah Jarosz releases her new album World on the Ground on June 5 and has just shared this new single from it. “I wrote this song with John Leventhal,” she says. “He had most of the piano melody written and recorded, and within moments of him playing it for me I had this very clear vision of the Cypress Trees in my hometown of Wimberley, Texas. I rode the subway home from John’s studio that evening with the melody in my inbox and the lyrics just poured out of me. We tweaked the form and a couple of lines the next day. This is one of those songs that feels like it was always a part of me but was waiting for the right time to emerge.”

WHITE DENIM – “I DON’T UNDERSTAND ROCK AND ROLL” & “WORK”

White Denim have shared a double-A-side single ahead of new album World as a Waiting Room which drops next week and which they put together over the last month during COVID-19 lockdown. Both are riffy, new-wavey rockers.

DOJA CAT – “SAY SO” (ft. NICKI MINAJ)

Two days after Beyonce hopped on a remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s viral Tik Tok hit “Savage,” Nicki Minaj hopped on a remix of Doja Cat’s viral Tik Tok “Say So.” Choice lyric: “Ain’t talkin’ medicine, but I made him more a fiend / Ever since I put the cookie on quarantine.”

BODY STUFF – “NEW YORK IN THE RAIN” (XIU XIU REMIX)

“New York in the Rain” is a very relatable song title right now, and today Xiu Xiu has offered up a remix of this song by former Today Is The Day/Wetnurse member Curran Reynolds’ Body Stuff project. The original came out earlier this year on Body Stuff 3.

JASON ANDERSON – “CLIMAX, MICHIGAN”

Long-running indie singer/songwriter Jason Anderson has released this lovely, folky new song.

PYRRHON – “ABSCESS TIME”

“You could think of [‘Abscess Time’] as our version of ‘rock music,'” says Doug Moore of the usually death metal-oriented Pyrrhon. “It’s got more in common with The Stooges or Flipper than with Suffocation or Atheist.” That’s true, and this song is also a filthy mess (in a good way). Read more here.

YG – “LAUGH NOW, KRY LATER”

YG is staying prolific and will release a new album, Laugh Now, Kry Later, and here’s the title track from it. “There’s more heat coming when we’re back outside again, but wanted to give my fans something to vibe to while we’re all inside. Stay home, stay safe and stay dangerous,” YG says.

KOTA THE FRIEND – “B.Q.E.” (ft. JOEY BADA$$ & BAS)

Long-running riffers The Sword have a new compilation, Chronology 2006 – 2018 and Conquest of Kingdoms, on the way, and it’ll include this newly-released cover of Kiss’ “She.”

THE AQUABATS – “NO ONE WANTS TO PARTY!”

The Aquabats haven’t changed a bit, as the latest taste of Pajamzon! proves.

GATHERERS – “AD NAUSEAM, I DROWN”

NJ post-hardcore band Gatherers have signed to No Sleep Records and they’ll release their fourth album on the label later this year. This is the first single, which you can read more about (and check out a playlist of songs the band members were listening to while writing the new album) here.

CHELSEA WOLFE – “SHEENA’S IN A GOTH GANG” (CRAMPS COVER)

Chelsea Wolfe offered up a killer take on this Cramps classic for Really Bad Music For Really Bad People: The Cramps as Heard Through the Meat Grinder of Three One G.

LAURA STEVENSON – “AFTER THOSE WHO MEAN IT”

“Today, I released a new song called ‘After Those Who Mean It,’” Laura Stevenson writes. “The outpouring of support I have received this past week has been overwhelming, both in the form of messages of well-wishes from longtime fans and friends as well as paypal/venmo donations and online merch orders. It was a much-needed dose of positive energy and spirit for me and my family. This song was written a long time ago, and I had demoed it a few times over the past few years. But this version, recorded by the incredible John Agnello at Building Records felt appropriate to release now, as it deals with themes of illness, grief and disconnection from those you seek to comfort. Aside from being in a birth center for three days, I haven’t left my house in over two months. I wanted to put something out as a way of saying thanks to all of those folks who reached out and touched me over the last week, and also for anyone who it might bring peace to. Let’s keep in touch, and keep each other and ourselves safe.”

DOPE BODY – HOME BODY

Dope Body recorded their new album, Home Body, over the past month while in quarantine, and it’s out today via Drag City.

HENNESSEY- “LET’S PRETEND (IT’S THE 80S)”

Leah Hennessey, whose father is David Johannsen, has her own namesake band that has just released this new single that pays homage to the NYC downtown scene, namedropping Lizzy Mercier Descloux and Maripol, while sounding a little like it coulda come out back then too.

WRECKLESS ERIC – “SICK ORGANISM”

You may recall that punk/new wave great Wreckless Eric tested positive for coronavirus a couple weeks ago. As he wrote then, he continued to write and record through it all, and this is one of those, a song written for him by Wesley Stace.  “It’s all about the virus! The coughing is genuine by the way.”

JARV IS… – “HOUSE MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG” JASON’S JACK IS… MIX

Today (5/1) was the original release date for Beyond the Pale, the debut album from Jarvis Cocker‘s new band JARV IS… but coronavirus complications caused it to be postponed till September 4.
