22 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SUNE ROSE (RAVEONETTES) – “AFTER ALL”

One half of very tall Danish duo Raveonettes, Sune Rose Wagner has just released a solo single. “I wanted to make an epic song about doomed love using big guitars and great vocal harmonies,” says Sune. While we might argue that statement also describes most Raveonettes songs, and that if you’d told us “After All” was a Raveonettes song we wouldn’t have batted an eye, it doesn’t change the fact that this is actually very good.

KRISTIN HERSH – “LAX”

Kristin Hersh has just shared another track from her new solo album, Possible Dust Clouds. This one’s got serious early-’90s Throwing Muses vibes to it, with pounding drums, a nagging guitar riff, and a big chorus.

LOPHIILE – “COMMON SENSE” (ft. VIC MENSA)

Producer/multi-instrumentalist Tyler Acord is one third of R&B/soul group Radiant Children who recently released their TRYIN’ EP (you may have heard “Life’s A Bitch” from that EP on the season three premiere of Insecure). He is also a solo artist under the name Lophiile. Last year, Lophiile teamed up with Freddie Gibbs for the collab single “Off Top,” and now he’s back with another awesome collaboration, “Common Sense” ft. Vic Mensa, which premiered at Complex. Lophiile provides a psychedelic backdrop, and Vic navigates it expertly.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER – “ODE TO BEDLAM”

One-man industrial band Author & Punisher showed off a poppier side of himself on previous single “Night Terror” (without abandoning his usual abrasion), and new single “Ode To Bedlam” follows a similar path. Over a metallic, machinelike loop, he delivers a vocal you could almost call “gentle” before reverting back to a gravelly growl.

CINERAMA – “THE NAME OF THE GAME” (ABBA COVER)

The two sides of UK indie rock vet David Gedge — the hyper / loud The Wedding Present, and the Morricone-influenced Cinerama — manifest themselves at the same time via a new split single. Both sides are covers: The Wedding Present take on The Clash’s “White Riot” while Cinerama tackle ABBA’s “The Name of the Game.” We haven’t heard The Clash cover but the flip side certainly gives Cher a run for the money.

BIG JOANIE – “FALL ASLEEP”

“Big Joanie are a black feminist punk band. We’re like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and 90s riot grrrl, with a sprinkling of dashikis,” reads the London trio’s bio. Following some lo-fi EPs and demos on Bandcamp, they’re now set to release their debut full-length album, Sistahs, in November. It’s being released by the Daydream Library Series, the record label run by Eva Prinz and Thurston Moore’s publishing house Ecstatic Peace Library. The fist single is “Fall Asleep,” which is tighter, catchier, and cleaner than anything they’ve done before, but without losing their DIY/punk spirit. It’s very fun stuff.

LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER – “SHALLOW”

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s A Star Is Born remake (which also features Dave Chappelle) hits US theaters next week (10/5), and they’ve now released the song “Shallow” from the film, which was written by Gaga, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando, and Mark Ronson.

IDK – “ELECTRIC” (ft. Q Da Fool)

The latest Adult Swim single comes from the rising, increasingly great IDK (fka Jay IDK). He brings fellow Maryland rapper Q Da Fool into the mix, and the result is the eerie banger “Electric.”

REVOCATION – THE OUTER ONES (ALBUM STREAM)

Boston death metallers Revocation are releasing their new album The Outer Ones this Friday via Metal Blade. Based one early singles, it sounds like this album is going to rip at least as much as its predecessor, and now you can find out by streaming the whole thing a day early.

DANIEL BLUMBERG (ex-YUCK) – “FAMILY”

Daniel Blumberg used to front ’90s-style indie rock revivalists Yuck, and then he started Hebronix, and he currently makes music under his own name. His debut album Minus came out on Mute earlier this year, and he has now shared a new non-album track from the sessions, “Family.” It’s a lot more tender and a lot more experimental than Yuck, and it’s very cool stuff.

MOZZY – “WALK UP”

We’re just one week away from Mozzy’s anticipated new album Gangland Landlord, and another single from it is now here. “Walk Up” is a melancholic ballad, but Mozzy still sounds tough as nails.

FUCKED UP – “DOSE YOUR DREAMS” & “ACCELERATE”

Fucked Up have unleashed two more songs off their anticipated new album Dose Your Dreams, the title track and “Accelerate” (the latter of which also comes with a video). On the title track, you can really hear the Primal Scream comparison that Owen Pallett made, while “Accelerate” is nearly in industrial territory. We’ve still got a week to go before we hear the whole thing, but one thing is very clear: Fucked Up have not ever made an album like this before.

SAINT ETIENNE – “LITTLE CHEF”

UK trio Saint Etienne were selling a tour-only EP of brand new songs at merch tables on stops of their recent Good Humor 20th anniversary celebration and one of those songs, “Camel Coat,” is coming out as a 7″ single. You can hear its b-side, “Little Chef,” right now. All strings and melodramatic non-lyrical singing, it sounds like the closing credits to a 1971 Italian b-movie. Presumably one about a little chef.

SPIRITUAL CRAMP – “THE ERASURE”

San Francisco band Spiritual Cramp (who are on tour with Radioactivity soon) make taut, punchy new wavey rock, perfect for skinny ties and suits…which the band wear in the video for new single “The Erasure.” That track’s off a new 12″ EP, Television, which is out via Deranged on October 12. Frontman Michael Bingham says it’s “about trying not to completely lose my personality in the quest for self-betterment. Erasing all the parts about myself I know are wrong, but accidentally erasing some of the good parts with it.”

BEACH BUNNY – “ADULTING”

Chicago indie pop quartet Beach Bunny is led by Lili Trifilio, who began the project as a singer-songwriter in 2015. She describes their latest release, the Prom Queen EP, as “a collection of feelings from my high-school diary,” and with their summery, poppy vibes and lyrics that evoke a kind of half-cringing nostalgia, that description couldn’t been more apt. “Life was easier when on the verge of seventeen,” Lili sings on “Adulting.” “Can’t buy alcohol, I’m taking shots of Listerine.” Later in the song, the statement “adolescence is a mid-quarter life crisis” feels both totally overdramatic and also entirely true, emblematic of many teenage feelings.

THYLA – “CANDY”

Brighton, UK quartet Thyla are releasing their debut EP in January, and they’ve shared its lead single, “Candy.” “You know when you have impending doom,” the band told The Line of Best Fit, “and you have no idea why because there’s nothing specifically wrong that you can put your finger on, and your dreams are messed up, and when you wake up you wonder what they mean? That’s what ‘Candy’ is about.” With its squealing guitars, imagery of teeth falling out in dreams, and pleading chorus of “get away from me, get away,” “Candy” definitely evokes a sort of nameless dread, building up to a cathartic bridge.

MUSE – “PRESSURE”

Muse are preparing to release a new LP, Simulation Theory, in November, and they’ve followed “The Dark Side” with “Pressure,” another new single with an effects-heavy accompanying video. This one, directed by previous collaborator Lance Drake and starring Terry Crews, Chance Michael and Julia Robinson, depicts a high school homecoming dance gone wrong… and possibly vampires?

ADIA VICTORIA – “DOPE QUEENS BLUES”

Nashville, TN’s Adia Victoria’s wrote her new single “Dope Queen Blues” about her early 20’s in Atlanta, GA. “It was a hazy, wild, debaucherous time,” she writes. “I was putting myself back in the shoes of that 20 year old that had just absolute freedom. We were making money and blowing it. It was a carefree time when we revelled in all of our vices.” The National’s Aaron Dessner produced the track, and she’ll be performing at their NYC festival, There’s No Leaving New York, on Saturday (9/29)

FLEET FOXES – “ISLES”

Fleet Foxes are streaming the 2008 b-side “Isles” from their upcoming First Collection 2006 – 2009, which we wrote more about here.

TERA MELOS – “LEMON GROVE” (ft. ROB CROW)

Tera Melos and Pinback’s Rob Crow are an underground rock match made in heaven, as new song “Lemon Grove” proves. Read more here.

PISTOL ANNIES – THREE SONGS

Pistol Annies (aka Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley) announced their new album Interstate Gospel and released three songs from it. Listen to the title track below and the other two here.
