23 New Metal & Hardcore Songs Out This Week

There’s a lot of good heavy music out this week, like the Sharptooth album, which I reviewed for Notable Releases. You can also head to Invisible Oranges’ Upcoming Metal Releases for more, including Skeleton, Rebel Wizard, Voivod, last week’s MSW (Hell) album, and more. Also scroll down for new singles from Pallbearer, Svalbard, Undeath, Neurosis’ Steve Von Till, Foretoken, Enslaved, Cunts, Valkyrie, Kommand, Unreal City, and more…

PALLBEARER – “FORGOTTEN DAYS”

Pallbearer have officially announced their long-discussed, highly anticipated fourth album, Forgotten Days, and released the title track, which you can read more about here.

SVALBARD – “OPEN WOUND”

UK post-hardcore greats Svalbard announced a new album, When I Die, Will I Get Better?, and the powerful lead single “Open Wound” finds the band in more atmospheric territory than usual. Read more here.

UNDEATH – “LESIONS OF A DIFFERENT KIND” (ft. TREVOR STRNAD)

Rochester death metallers Undeath signed to Prosthetic for their upcoming debut album, and you can read more about the lead single/title track (ft. guest vocals by The Black Dahlia Murder’s Trevor Strnad) here.

STEVE VON TILL – “INDIFFERENT EYES”

Neurosis’ Steve Von Till’s new solo album No Wilderness Deep Enough comes out 8/7 via Neurot, and if you like Neurosis’ softer side, all of the singles from this album have so far scratched that same itch. This new one is no exception.

FORETOKEN – “THE RETRIBUTION”

Virginia Beach thrashy, symphonic death metallers Foretoken have signed to Prosthetic and they’ll re-release their debut album Ruin on September 4 via their new label home. The album originally came out earlier this year but has since been pulled offline, but while you wait for the re-release you can hear “The Retribution,” which is pretty killer stuff.

ENSLAVED – “JETTEGRYTA”

Norwegian progressive black metal veterans Enslaved have shared another track off their upcoming album Utgard, and it’s a mammoth of a song.

CUNTS – “THE NAIL”

Cunts (whose lineup includes Michael Crain of Dead Cross/Retox and Matt Cronk of Qui) dropped a new noise-punk rager that they wrote and recorded during the pandemic. “The track is basically about the fear and uncertainty of living through a pandemic and facing a legitimate apocalypse in the midst of a massive social revolution,” Cronk tells Revolver. Crain adds, “To me, the title of the track encapsulates it all. The nail, the end, the end of the old, the death of the old ways, the old system, the death of bigotry, racists and the old system. Nail that coffin shut.”

VALKYRIE – “EVIL EYE”

Valkyrie, the Virginia heavy rock band led by former Baroness member Pete Adams and his brother Jake, are nearing the release of their new album Fear (due 7/24 via Relapse), and here’s another hard, riffy, anthemic rocker from it.

MOON TOOTH – “AWE AT ALL ANGLES” (ACOUSTIC)

NYC prog metallers Moon Tooth are releasing an EP with acoustic reworks of four songs and one new one (called “Six of Swords”) on July 31 via Pure Noise. The first taste of Violent Grief: Acoustic Selections is this new version of “Awe At All Angles” from 2019’s Crux.

HURAÑA – “MI GGENERACIÓN”

Chiapas punks HURAÑA are releasing the Brujas, Cholas E Inventadas 7″ on July 31 via Iron Lung Records, and first single “Mi Ggeneración” is an acid-splashed punk burner that — as Iron Lung also says — would probably appeal to fans of Dead Kennedys’ darker side.

URSULA – “FICKLE”

Apple Valley, California’s Ursula are releasing the three-song Evergreen EP on August 7 via Indecision Records, and first single “Fickle” injects tough, metallic hardcore with emotional honesty and just a hint of atmosphere and melody.

GHOUL – “THE NECTARNOMICON”

Splatterthrashers Ghoul (who, like Nekrogoblikon, are “running for president”) are back with a totally chaotic, sensory overload of a new song, “The Nectarnomicon.”

KOMMAND – “RADIATION”

LA death metallers Kommand are following two self-released demos with their first proper full-length, Terrorscape, on July 17 via Maggot Stomp, and first single “Radiation” is raw, sludgy death metal that’s equal parts brutal and hypnotic.

UNREAL CITY – “WAR BEHIND BARS”

Pittsburgh hardcore maniacs Unreal City will release Cruelty of Heaven, the long-awaited followup to their 2007 debut Ephemeral Subsistence, on August 21 via Closed Casket Activities. In the time since that album, vocalist Joseph Sanderson has been busy fronting Eternal Sleep, who are also a great band, but it’s great to hear him once again barking over the Slayer-ish riffs of Robert Orr (who used to be Integrity), as he does on Cruelty of Heaven‘s killer lead single “War Behind Bars.”

ALL PIGS MUST DIE – “DEEP SLEEP” (POISON IDEA COVER)

During the sessions for 2017’s Hostage Animal, Boston metallic hardcore supergroup All Pigs Must Die (members of Converge, The Hope Conspiracy, American Nightmare, Trap Them, etc) recorded a crisp, brutal cover of Poison Idea’s “Deep Sleep” from 1990’s Feel the Darkness (one of the albums with drummer Steve “Thee Slayer Hippy” Hanford, who sadly passed away earlier this year) and released it as a bonus track on the Japanese version of Hostage Animal. Now they’ve finally given it a digital release too.

INTER ARMA – “THE GIRL WHO LIVES ON HEAVEN HILL” (HUSKER DU COVER)

Inter Arma’s new covers album is out today, and one of its major highlights is this blackened punk version of Husker Du’s “The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill.”

GREG PUCIATO – “DO YOU NEED ME TO REMIND YOU?”

Greg Puciato, frontman of the now-defunct Dillinger Escape Plan (and The Black Queen and Killer Be Killed), has revealed the details on his upcoming debut solo album and released a new song from it. Read more here.

IDLE HANDS – “IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER” & “PUPPY LOVE”

Portland metal-friendly goth rockers Idle Hands have put out a new single featuring two songs that they wrote in late 2017, started recording in early 2018, and then abandoned for two years until finally finishing them earlier this year. Both are as driving and catchy and morose as you’d hope for from this band, and there’s no lack of delightfully flashy riffage either. Read more here.

BENT SEA – “SYCOPHANT LEGIONS”

Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren has released a new song by his grind project Bent Sea, and this one features Feastem vocalist Petri Eskelinen and Nasum bassist Jesper Liveröd. It’s a scorcher.

XYTHLIA – “THE EYE BATH”

Xythlia (the solo project of Ashbringer’s Nick Stanger) is releasing Immortality Through Quantum Suicide on August 21 via I, Voidhanger. First single “The Eye Bath” is a totally chaotic blend of grind, death, and proggy discordance.

CONSTANT ELEVATION (MOVIELIFE, YOUTH OF TODAY) – “KRS TWO”

Vinnie Caruana (The Movielife, I Am The Avalanche) and Sammy Siegler’s (Youth of Today, Judge, Rival Schools, etc) band Constant Elevation are releasing a new EP in August, including this new song. Read more about it — and read a list made by Vinnie and Sammy of music that influenced the EP — here.

SPIRITWORLD – PAGAN RHYTHMS

Vegas metallic punks SpiritWorld (the project of Stu Folsom, but which also includes other members like former Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen) dropped this new album, and it’s a vicious, whiplash-inducing racket. Gatecreeper’s Chase Mason designed the artwork.

VENOM – EARLY DEMOS

Last year, metal legends Venom released a nearly-$200 box set documenting their early-to-mid-1980s era, and included in that box set was a previously unreleased album of some of the band’s earliest demos and rehearsal recordings, including some with original singer Clive “Jesus Christ” Archer (plus one later demo from 1983), Sons Of Satan. That album is now getting its own release on August 28th via BMG. Read more and hear three of the demos at Invisible Oranges.
