23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SLOWTHAI – “GLORIOUS” (ft. SKEPTA)

UK rapper slowthai’s anticipated debut album Nothing Great About Britain drops at midnight, and ahead of its release he shared one last single, “Glorious,” which features influential grime vet Skepta. They unsurprisingly sound great together, and the video (directed by Crowns & Owls) makes allusions to A Clockwork Orange and Inglorious Basterds. In other news, slowthai was just on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show yesterday and offered up an “Old Town Road” remix on the show.

THE BLACK KEYS – “GO”

In the video for The Black Keys’ new summery single “Go,” members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are not speaking and haven’t spoken to each other in five years. Their therapist sends them off to a spiritual retreat to work out their differences. Can a yogi help them? New album Let’s Rock is out June 28.

SAINT VITUS – SAINT VITUS (ALBUM STREAM)

Doom legends Saint Vitus are releasing their first album with original vocalist Scott Reagers in 24 years this week. It’s self-titled (and not to be confused with their self-titled 1984 debut), and it sees the band mining very familiar territory, and they still do this kind of thing very well.

OPEN MIKE EAGLE – “LIT” (ft. FATHER)

Each episode of Open Mike Eagle and Baron Vaughn’s Comedy Central show The New Negroes features a series of stand-up comedians and then ends with an original song/video by Open Mike Eagle and a new guest artist each week. This week’s episode features the song “Lit” with Father, which makes deadpan observations about how so much of partying is really just sitting on a couch, and some trippy animation is involved in the Lance Bangs-directed video.

PETROL GIRLS – CUT & STITCH (ALBUM STREAM)

Austria-via-London feminist post-hardcore band Petrol Girls are releasing their new album Cut & Stitch next week (5/24), and the whole thing is streaming now. “Feminism has become more of an overall approach than an obvious topic, seeping into the way we think about everything from the environment to mental health. We’ve also started to think more about what feminism means for men, given that half of the band are men, and explore the perspective of a man struggling with expressing his emotions in ‘Talk in Tongues,'” the band says. Their message comes across powerfully on these songs, and sonically, the album nails the balance between aggression and melody. Stream the whole thing at NPR.

METZ – “PURE AUTO”

METZ are releasing a rarities compilation called Automat on July 12 via Sub Pop, and along with the announcement they shared the animated video for “Pure Auto,” which originally came out as a B-side to 2015’s “Eraser.” If you aren’t familiar with the song, it’s cut from the same noise-punk cloth that METZ songs are usually cut from, and it’s a ripper.

SLIPKNOT – “UNSAINTED”

Slipknot officially announced their first album in five years and the lead single is out now.

MY TEENAGE STRIDE – “SENSE IS THE VALLEY”

Brooklyn indie stalwarts My Teenage Stride have been dropping new digital singles pretty regularly lately, and here’s a lovely new one that’s got a distinct Velvet Underground “Sunday Morning” vibe.

JOANNA STERNBERG – “FOR YOU”

NYC-based musician and songwriter Joanna Sternberg is releasing Then I Try Some More on July 5 via Team Love Records. The newest single from that album, “For You,” it an earnest slice of minimal bedroom pop. “This song is about being in any sort of a relationship with a narcissistic person who does not care about you,” Joanna says. “I have always wanted to be friends with EVERYONE, so it has been difficult to say goodbye to these people. I wish all of them well. I wrote this song as a reminder to surround myself with people who reciprocate my love. I am sorry about the judgmental tone of this song, because I know that everybody feels pain and it is impossible to see into anyone’s mind, body or heart … but I guess life is full of fleeting emotions so if this song is too negative, maybe you will give me another chance and listen to ‘Pimba’ (my song about a baby penguin) which is the next track on the album!”

HALFSOUR – “MILK BATH”

Halfsour’s new album, Sticky, is out next week and here’s another crunchy, catchy single that recalls ’90s indie rock like Veruca Salt and Sleater-Kinney.

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE – SAINT OF LOST CAUSES (ALBUM STREAM)

Justin Townes Earle says his new album, The Saint of Lost Causes, is a loose concept album about social problems in America, from the Flint, MI water crisis to the shrinking WV coal industry. “I don’t think people in Flint, Mich., and Charleston, W. Va., think they have anything in common, but they do — a lot in common,” Earle told Billboard. “These are people who have driven America through an industry and then had America completely turn their backs on them. So I see that connection there. You see distinct cultures and distinct things in different towns, but they’re dealing with the same kinds of problems.” Stream the whole album at NPR and listen to “Frightened by the Sound” here:

CHRIS STAMEY – INSOMNIA (FEAT. KIRSTEN LAMBERT WITH BILL FRISELL & NELS CLINE)

Chris Stamey of The dB’s will release New Songs for the 20th Century on 28 June via Omnivore Recordings. The double album was inspired by sheet music found in an old piano bench, and he wrote songs in that Great American Songbook style and using a variety of guest musicians and vocalists. For a better idea of what to expect, check out “Insomnia,” which features vocals from Kirsten Lambert the playing of greats Bill Frisell and Nels Cline.

MAVIS STAPLES – WE GET BY (ALBUM STREAM)

Celebrating her 80th birthday this year, Mavis Staples new album was co-written and co-produced by Ben Harper. You can stream the whole thing over at NPR and listen to “Change” here:

SEBADOH – ACT SURPRISED (ALBUM STREAM)

Indie rock vets Sebadoh release their first album in six years, Act Surprised, next week which finds Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein slipping back into their roles with ease. The whole album is streaming at NPR now, and you can check out “Sunshine” here:

ERIKA DE CASIER – ESSENTIALS (ALBUM STREAM)

Danish vocalist and producer Erika de Casier self-released her debut solo album, Essentials, via her own Independent Jeep Music today. Its smooth sounds give off major Sade vibes, and if that is appealing to you, then it’s definitely worth a listen.

JUAN WAUTERS – “DOS”

Juan Wauters’ new album, Introducing Juan Pablo, will be out at the end of May and here’s a second single from it, the sunny, gentle “Dos.”

TRASH KIT – “HORIZON”

Rachel Aggs stays busy. In addition to Shopping and Sacred Paws, she’s been a member of Trash KIt for 10 years and the group are set to release their third album, Horizon, on July 5 via Upset the Rhythm.

NEW ORDER – “SUB-CULTURE” (LIVE)

New Order’s new live album was recorded at the 2017 Manchester International Festival and features reimagined and reworked versions of hits and deeps cuts, augmented by a 12-piece synth orchestra. This version of their single “Sub-Culture” falls somewhere between the minimalism of the original version on Low-LIfe and the massive 12″ version found on Substance.

DRESSY BESSY – “FEARLESS”

Dressy Bessy release their seventh album, Fast Fast Disaster, on June 14 via Yep Roc. Latest single “Fearless” features spitfire spoken word passages and stays true to the spirit of their punky, hooky sound.

HATCHIE – “OBSESSED”

Hatchie‘s debut album, Keepsake, will be out June 21 and she’s just shared a new single, the driving and dreamy “Obsessed” that blends shoegazey guitars with electronic pop.

JOSEPHINE WIGGS – “WE FALL”

Josephine Wiggs is best known as the bassist for The Breeders but her new solo album is mostly instrumentals inspired by Brian Eno and Harold Budd.

TYLER CHILDERS – “HOUSE FIRE”

Tyler Childers’ new album (co-produced by Sturgill Simpson) will be out in August, and you can read more about it and about lead single “House Fire” here.
