23 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

KANYE WEST AND LIL PUMP – “I LOVE IT”

Kanye and Lil Pump have teamed up for this new track, and while the song does have an infectious hook and a humorous verse from Kanye, the real attention-grabber is the track’s outrageous video. Executive produced by Spike Jonze, the video features Kanye and Lil Pump in oversized suits, a la Stop Making Sense or the video game Roblox, and shows the two staggering down a colorful hallway behind comedian Adele Givens, who provides the track’s intro. It’s a highly entertaining collaboration.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – HEX OF INFINITE BINDING EP & “HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN” (LIVE SEX PISTOLS COVER)

Surprise! John Darnielle dropped a new Mountain Goats EP on us today. “I used to release a whole bunch of EPs,” Danielle said in a note about the record. “I miss the general spiritual realm of the EP and am hereby centering an intention to spend more time thereat. These songs represent, in part, the first salvo of my resolve.” Here’s more from John on the EP:

“Almost Every Door” and “Song for Ted Sallis” were written at home in North Carolina sometime during the summer and recorded by Brandon Eggleston at Electrical Audio in Chicago during our three-night stand at Old Town School of Folk Music. “Tucson Fog” is a home recording from last December, things can get a little dark in December. “Hospital Reaction Shot” was produced & engineered by Chris Stamey at Modern Recording, Chapel Hill, NC; Chris also wrote the string arrangements and played bass and electric guitar. Percussion on “Almost Every Door” and “Song for Ted Sallis” by Matt Espy from Dead Rider, maximum respect. Only one of these songs is directly about death but the person or persons in all these songs will someday die. The death one, “Hospital Reaction Shot,” is drawn from a picture of Mickey Deans holding a press conference to inform the world of the death of Judy Garland, to whom he had been married for three months. Yet the press conference is a sham, because Judy Garland lives, as Ted Sallis lives, as do many others thought missing. They can often be found in the vortex shortly before sundown, plotting their return. We live in hope!

Stream the EP, and watch live footage of The Mountain Goats performing the Sex Pistols’ classic “Holidays in the Sun” live in Tulsa:

DILLY DALLY – “DOOM”

Dilly Dally’s new album, Heaven, is out next week and if you need one more crumb to tide you over, here’s “Doom” which the band’s Katie Monks says, “is about preserving your spirit despite all odds. When your friends are out of reach, and you feel like you could fall forever into a deep depression, this song is asking you to catch yourself.” The title also kinda describes the song’s heavy riffage, too.

NILE RODGERS + CHIC – “SOBER” (ft. CRAIG DAVID & STEFFLON DON)

Disco legend Nile Rodgers and his band Chic are releasing their first album in 25+ years, It’s About Time, on September 28. It was supposed to come out today, but the release date was pushed back, and instead Chic dropped a new single today. This one features Craig David and Stefflon Don (the album also features Vic Mensa, Mura Masa, Nao, Elton John, Lady Gaga, and more).

ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS – “SUSPECT MY TEARS”

Elvis Costello is prepping his first album with The Imposters in 10 years, Look Now, which will notably feature contributions by Burt Bacharach and Carole King. While this new song doesn’t feature any collaborators, it still sounds wonderfully grandiose, with Elvis’ vocals being nicely complemented by an elegant, sweeping string section and well-matched backing vocals.

OKKERVIL RIVER – “NEW BLOOD” & “SKIPTRACER”

Okkervil River is currently touring behind their great new LP In The Rainbow Rain, and they’ve just shared a pair of new songs, which were written during the sessions for that album. “New Blood” is a funky, densely-arranged indie pop jam with soulful backing vocals pulled straight from classic ’60s soul, and while “Skiptracer” isn’t quite as busy, the track’s reverb-soaked piano chords and overall atmosphere make it feel just as compelling.

ALUNAGEORGE – “SUPERIOR EMOTION” (ft. CAUTIOUS CLAY)

AlunaGeorge are releasing a new EP, Champagne Eyes, on October 5, and the first single is “Superior Emotion” which features Cautious Clay. It’s among the most chilled-out, downtempo music that AlunaGeorge have ever put out, and it’s good stuff.

KLAUS JOHANN GROBE – “SIEHST DU MICH NOCH?”

Swiss motorik disco duo Klaus Johann Grobe‘s forthcoming Du bist so Symmetrisch finds them exploring the dancefloor more than we’ve heard them do on previous records. That said, new single “Siehst Du Mich Noch?” (“Can You Still See Me”) is one of the quirkier, non-dancey songs on the records. Learn more HERE.

BASEMENT – “STIGMATA”

UK pop punks Basement will release their first album on Fueled By Ramen, Beside Myself, on October 12, and similar to the album’s previous single, the band sticks to their guns with this new track, featuring a powerful, sing-along hook, crushing guitars, and heavily emotional vocals; all of which wouldn’t seem that out of place on their last record.

T.I. – “JEFE” (ft. MEEK MILL) & “WRAITH” (ft. YO GOTTI)

T.I. is back on a major label (Epic) and he’s planning to release his tenth album Dime Trap on the label this year. Along with the news of the signing comes two new songs. Tip teams with the newly free Meek Mill for the horn-fueled “Jefe,” and he brings in Yo Gotti on the eerie, atmospheric “Wraith.”

AMBER MARK – “PUT YOU ON” (ft. DRAM)

Rising singer Amber Mark focuses on her throwback R&B side for this new head-nodder featuring sing-rapper DRAM.

PLANET B – “MANURE RALLY”

Planet B, aka Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Dead Cross, Head Wound City) and Luke Henshaw (Sonido de la Frontera, First Power Crew), have signed to Ipecac Recocrdings for their new self-titled album, which will be out on November 23 via their new label home. The album features Justin’s Head Wound City bandmate (and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist) Nick Zinner on a Depeche Mode cover, plus rap legend Kool Keith, post-punk/industrial vet Martin Atkins (of Public Image Ltd, Ministry, Killing Joke), other members of The Locust, and other guests, and the first single is the industrial-tinged “Manure Rally.”

KIRK KNIGHT – “RUN IT BACK” (FREESTYLE)

Pro Era’s Kirk Knight is gearing up to release a new album, IIWII (It Is What It Is), this fall, and he just dropped “Run It Back” (freestyle) along with a video featuring cameos by Joey Bada$$ and Meechy Darko (of Flatbush Zombies). For this one, Kirk raps his ass off over an ominous, self-produced beat. It’s a very promising first taste of the new LP.

SYLVAN ESSO & COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES – “FUNERAL SINGERS” (CALIFONE COVER)

Sylvan Esso recorded this cover of Califone’s “Funeral Singers” with Collections of Colonies of Bees at the Wilco studio while on tour together. They began to cover it together as an encore, and as Sylvan Esso tweeted, “the more we sang it together, the more we felt like we wanted to record it and share it with you.”

TTNG – “DOG” (REWORK w/ NATE KINSELLA & MIVOS QUARTET)

British math rock staples TTNG are releasing an acoustic re-working of their debut album Animals for its 10th anniversary, and this new reworking of “Dog” was arranged/produced by Nate Kinsella (Birthmark, American Football, Joan of arc, etc) and it features strings by The Mivos Quartet.

G PERICO – “ALL NIGHTER”

Rising West Coast rapper G Perico dropped the Guess What? EP today, along with a video for one of its songs, “All Nighter.” Like a lot of his best songs, it’s a very West Coast banger, and it’s more proof that G Perico cannot be stopped.

TORRES – “TWO OF EVERYTHING”

Torres was dropped by 4AD earlier this year after releasing the very good Three Futures in 2017, but luckily she’s continuing to make and release music on her own. She shared a new song, “Gracious Day,” in July, and now she’s followed it with a second, “Two of Everything.” That one is only available to those who support Torres via Patreon, which you can do for as little as $1.

THE POM-POMS – “I GOT THAT BOOM”

Kitty (fka Kitty Pryde) and Sam Ray (of American Pleasure Club and Ricky Eat Acid) both have their own musical projects, and now the married couple have a new joint project as well. They’re releasing an EP as The Pom-Poms in a couple of weeks, and they’ve shared the first single, the bouncy, drop heavy “I Got That Boom.”

WIKI – “IN THE PARK” (ft. GLOSS GANG)

Wiki dropped a new single and promised even more music is coming soon. We wrote more about it here.

BAD SPORTS – “DON’T DESERVE LOVE”

Garage punks Bad Sports released a new song off the upcoming Constant Stimulation, which we wrote more about here.
