It's a really big week for heavy music. I reviewed the new Elder, Barishi, and Ulcerate in Notable Releases, and I didn't review the first Cirith Ungol album in 29 years but I highly recommend it (and I recommend reading the extensive interview Joseph Aprill did with them for Invisible Oranges). You can also head to IO's Upcoming Metal Releases to read about Black Curse, Katatonia, Trivium, Auroch, the diSEMBOWELMENT reissues, and more. And keep scrolling for new singles from Paradise Lost, Wino, Ulthar, Eye of Nix, Nuvolascura, Chelsea Wolfe, Lamb of God, END, Graf Orlock, and more...

PARADISE LOST - "GHOSTS"

UK death-doom vets Paradise Lost recently released "Fall From Grace" off their upcoming album Obsidian (due 5/15 via Nuclear Blast), and though that first single found the band operating in their classic death-doom realm, new single "Ghosts" is more like a metallic version of '80s goth/deathrock. Not bad.

WINO - "ISOLATION" (JOY DIVISION COVER)

A lot of people have been covering Joy Division's "Isolation" lately for obvious reasons, but Wino has actually been playing his version of this song live for years, and his just-released studio version of the song is from his upcoming solo album. Read more here.

--

ULTHAR - "THROUGH DOWNWARD DYNASTIES"

Bay Area death metallers Ulthar have announced their sophomore album and shared this monstrous lead single, which you can read more about here.

--

EYE OF NIX - "CONCEALING WATERS"

Eye of Nix will release a new album in June, and here's the great first single, which pulls from gothy, Dead Can Dance-type stuff as much as it pulls from black metal. Read more here.

--

NUVOLASCURA - "APYREXY"

LA screamo band Nuvolascura will follow last year's great self-titled debut LP with As We Suffer From Memory and Imagination, due this summer via Zegema Beach/Dog Knights. Like their debut, they made it with the great Jack Shirley, and the first single is the searing "Apyrexy."

--

CHELSEA WOLFE & MEMS OF DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, MUTOID MAN & MORE - "CRAZY TRAIN" (OZZY OSBOURNE COVER)

It's genuinely awesome; read more here.

--

LAMB OF GOD - "NEW COLOSSAL HATE"

Lamb of God have shared the third single off their upcoming self-titled album (which was pushed back from May 8 to June 19 via Epic), and it's a classic-LOG-sounding skull-crusher.

--

END - "COVET NOT"

Hardcore/metalcore supergroup END (members of Counterparts, Fit For An Autopsy, Misery Signals, Shai Hulud, etc) have shared a second track from their upcoming debut full-length. Read more here.

--

GRAF ORLOCK - "VIOLENT ULTIMATUM AT THE LOCAL DOJO" & "BLEAK NEWS REPORT IN THE OFFICE BREAKROOM"

Metallic hardcore maniacs Graf Orlock have got a new two-song Decibel flexi, and both songs bang.

--

REBEL WIZARD - "NOT RAIN BUT THE WIZARDS TEARS"

Self-proclaimed "heavy negative wizard metal" band Rebel Wizard will release Magickal Mystical Indifference on July 10 via Prosthetic, and you can read more about this new single at Invisible Oranges.

--

RETOX - "GARBAGEMAN" & MICROWAVES - "DON'T EAT STUFF OFF THE SIDEWALK" (CRAMPS COVERS)

Two more songs from Three One G's Cramps covers album are here, and both are very cool takes on these creeper-punk classics. In related news, read about Justin Pearson's new project with Dave Lombardo.

--

THE WEAPON (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE'S JESSE LEACH) - "SLAVE STATE"

Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach has been ambient music lately, and now he released a quarantine video of his punk band The Weapon debuting a new song, "Slave State." It sounds more like '80s hardcore than like Killswitch Engage, and it's pretty badass.

--

C.H.E.W. - IN DUE TIME

Chicago punks C.H.E.W. dropped this five-song EP on Iron Lung Records, and if you like your punk loud, fast, short, and chaotic with just a hint of melody, you should check this out.

--

BEAR - "GUTTER LOVE"

Belgian metalpunks Bear's new album Propaganda drops May 8 via Pelagic, and you can read more about this new single here.

--

REJOICE - "PROMETHEAN FLAMAE"

Ohio's Rejoice dropped this new minute-twenty metallic hardcore rager that sounds raw and jagged and abrasive but with just a hint of accessibility.

--

ARMYWIVES - ARMYWIVES

Brooklyn/Philly emo/screamo band Armywives have been at it for about a decade, and after dropping some one-off singles last year, they're now back with a four-song self-titled EP on Zegema Beach/Missed Out, their first multi-song project in a while. They nail a balance between a heavy/aggressive side and an atmospheric/melodic side, and that balance really peaks on closing track "First You Must Die To Be Reborn," which is about twice as long as all the others and finds Armywives in appealingly ambitious territory.

--

LISTLESS - "NO REMORSE"

Listless, who call themselves a "six-piece revenge band" and whose lineup includes drummer John Crogan (of .gif from god, Ostraca, and other bands), have an upcoming split with Amygdala, and it'll include this gnarled dose of raw, metallic hardcore.

--

MIKAU - "PHANTOMa/mode.1:your_nervous_system_leaves_much_to_be_desired"

Not only do we highly recommend the new Infant Island, we also are fans of this new rager by Mikau, the DC metalcore band Infant Island drummer Austin O'Rourke also plays in.

KAFKA. / JUNIOR LEAGUES / VIRGINIA ON DUTY / TDOAFS SPLIT

Here's a killer four-way screamo split from Prague's kafka., Russia's Junior Leagues, Malaysia's Virginia On Duty, and Montreal's tdoafs. If you're unfamiliar with any of them, this is a fine introduction. All of these songs rip, and the split flies by, leaving you wanting more.

--

REDWOODS - (SELF-TITLED)

Here's another killer screamo record that just dropped - new EP from California's Redwoods, who put out some live recordings beforer this, but who make their studio-recorded debut with this EP. Veronika Reinert's voice is like a serrated knife, and Brandon Brunt's gut-punching drum tone is no small part of this EP's appeal either.

--

PLAGUE WALKER - PARA MIS ENEMIGOS

One more: Indiana's Plague Walker follow 2017's Palomas EP with their first full-length, and it's 16 tracks of dark, raw, throat-shredding screamo that will shake you to your core.

--

Inter Arma released a pay-what-you-want live album with all proceeds going to COVID-19 relief.

--

METH. - B-SIDES / DEMOS / OLD IDEAS
