24 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

YBN CORDAE – “RNP” (ft. ANDERSON PAAK, prod. J COLE)

YBN Cordae’s anticipated debut album The Lost Boy comes out this week and he has shared another song from it, “RNP.” Over a funky beat from J. Cole, Cordae and Anderson .Paak go back and forth, trading the mic every few words, and the whole thing is a very fun listen.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES – “KOHOKIA”

Russian Circles have shared a third single off their upcoming album Blood Year, and it sees them trekking through seven minutes of intense, epic, instrumental metal.

DUMP HIM – “DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR”

MA pop-punk/queercore band Dump Him are releasing their first full-length album, Dykes to Watch Out For, due out August 30 via Get Better Records/Musical Fanzine Records, and they’ve shared its irresistably catchy title track,

MANEKA – “POSITIVE”

Maneka (aka former Speedy Ortiz/Grass Is Green guitarist Devin McKnight) is releasing his new album Devin on Exploding In Sound this Friday and he has shared one last single from it, “Positive.” If you like your indie rock on the more experimental side, you might wanna give this one a spin.

THE HOLD STEADY – “YOU DID GOOD KID”

The Hold Steady are releasing Thrashing Thru The Passion, due out August 16 via Frenchkiss, and its title was taken from new single “You Did Good Kid.” Craig Finn says it’s “the first song we worked on for this session, and remains a favorite.” “It went though a few iterations before we came to this arrangement,” he continues, “and I’m really psyched on it. It feels great to play live.”

KNOCKED LOOSE – “TRAPPED IN THE GRASP OF A MEMORY”

Knocked Loose have shared another single off their upcoming album A Different Shade of Blue (due 8/23 via Pure Noise), and it’s cool stuff. As far as the wave of modern hardcore bands repurposing the sounds of metalcore and nu metal goes, Knocked Loose are one of the more interesting ones and this new album remains highly anticipated.

TINARIWEN – “ZAWAL”

Storied Tuareg band Tinariwen have shared another single off their upcoming album Amadjar (due 9/6 via ANTI-/PIAS), and this one features Warren Ellis, Noura Mint Seymali, and Jeiche Ould Chighaly. Tinariwen’s music is often a lot closer to the sounds of American/British psychedelic rock than you might expect from a Malian band, and this entrancing song is a great example of that.

ARIEL VIEW – “FRIDAY NIGHTS”

Ahead of a tour supporting The Beths, Ariel View signed to Epitaph and released new single “Friday Nights.” Its indie pop meets surf-rock inspired sounds are well matched for The Beths’ music, making the pairing a fitting one. “I wrote ‘Friday Nights’ when the relationship ended with my ex and I impulsively wrote down a list of all the times they did me wrong in our relationship,” vocalist Harmonie Martinez says.

BETTY DAVIS (PERFORMED BY DANIELLE MAGGIO) – “A LITTLE BIT HOT TONIGHT”

Influential funk and soul musician Betty Davis has released her first song in 40 years. The idea for “A Little Bit Hot Tonight” came to her in the early 1980s, while performing with the Arakawa Band in Tokyo, and this year she finally wrote and arranged the song. It was recorded in her hometown of Pittsburgh by local musicians, and proceeds from its sale on Bandcamp will go to the Betty Davis Scholarship fund, which is awarded annually to a graduating senior at Davis’s old school, Steel Valley High School, who plans to pursuing music.

WEEPING ICON – “RIPE FOR CONSUMPTION”

Brooklyn trio Weeping Icon have been around for a few years now and have just announced their self-titled debut album will be out September 27 via Fire Talk/Kanine. The first single is the hazy punk ripper “Ripe for Consumption” which the band say is “about the mutation many art professionals undergo as they move up the scales of independent platforms to larger stages. Stepping into the limelight without hesitation and eager to take credit for generating projects that were often manufactured and maintained by community members who remain unrecognized (often the socially disenfranchised), these personalities are flocked to and flattered by the frenzied masses looking for a connection to boost their own rise in the social world of art.” The video, directed by Rafael Joson and Michael Andretti, “responds to this concept by focusing on a day in the life of three 2000s punk kids – ghosts of the past who initiated so many of us into an adoration for challenging art, who live in us still.”

HARMONY WOODS – “GHOSTS”

Philadelphia musician Sofia Verbilla released her debut album as Harmony Woods, Nothing Special, back in 2017, and she’s preparing its follow-up, Skeletal Lighting, due out October 4 via Skeletal Lightning. New single “Ghosts” has a melancholy, emo-leaning edge, and you can listen via Phluff.

YOUNG GUV – “PATTERNS PREVAIL”

Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook explores his jangly power pop side on his Young Guv solo albums, and the latest is titled GUV and out next week. New single “Patterns Prevail” is honey-sweet and extremely catchy. “The track is a love letter written by my collaborator Aurora Shields, but dissolved into a song,” Cook says. “As long as the patterns in the colours of a rainy summer sky mash together with a glowing streetlight continue to prevail in a bittersweet tangerine tone, so do the patterns in the musical notes of yearning and infatuation, of tenderness and chaos, rapture and combustion. Complimentary patterns of the night and day will always prevail. We are all experiencing sadness and happiness through love, and that’s the balance of it. That’s life, I suppose.”

HERE LIES MAN – “LONG LEGS (LOOK AWAY)”

L.A. band Here Lies Man will release No Ground To Walk Upon in August which continues to find them mixing metal, psych and African music. “We’re very conscious of how the rhythms service the riffs,” says vocalist/guitarist and Antibalas member Marcos Garcia. “Tony Iommi’s (Black Sabbath) innovation was to make the riff the organizing principle of a song. We are taking that same approach but employing a different organizing principle: For Iommi it was the blues, for us it comes directly from Africa.” You can feel that heavy groove on this new single.

TY SEGALL – “ICE PLANT” (FT. SHANNON LAY)

We’re used to Ty Segall rocking out and we’ve even seen his softer, sleepier side but there’s almost always some guitar involved. That’s what makes “Ice Plant,” from Ty’s forthcoming First Taste, so unusual. Not only is there no guitar, there’s also no bass, drums or any instrumentation at all, just him and layers of vocal harmonies (some of which are provided by Shannon Lay).

ALLAH-LAS – “IN THE AIR”

It’s the first single from Allah-Las new album, LAHS, and the video is an homage to ’80s comedy Weekend at Bernies with a cameo from Kirin J Callinan.

POSSIBLE HUMANS – “LUNG OF THE CITY”

Melbourne, Australia’s Possible Humans will give their debut album, originally only released on vinyl and they only made 200 of them, a more proper release next week. Until then check out the jangly, melancholic “Lung of the City.”

CRYPT SERMON – “CHRIST IS DEAD”

Crypt Sermon have shared a second single off their anticipated sophomore album The Ruins of Fading Light, which is due September 13th via Dark Descent. It’s called “Christ Is Dead,” and it’s got just about everything you want from modern, trad-style doom: soaring, melodic choruses, towering riffage, fiery solos, and an ever so slightly fresh twist on this decades-old sound. Listen to the song at NPR.

URN – “MALIGNANT STRANGE VISION”
