25 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CAROLINE ROSE – “FEEL THE WAY I WANT”

Caroline Rose will release new album Superstar on March 6 via New West. It’s a concept album about celebrity and dreams and the first single is the buoyant “Feel The Way I Want” Rose directed the video which was filmed on an iPhone during an 11-day road trip from Hollywood, California to Hollywood, Florida.

THE INNOCENCE MISSION – “THE BROTHERS WILLIAMS SAID”

Led by Karen Peris and husband Don Peris, veteran dreampop group The Innocence Mission are set to release new album, See You Tomorrow, on January 17 via Thérèse Records / Bella Union. Album opener “The Brothers Williams Said” is a delicate showcase for Karen’s ethereal, fragile vocals.

BILL FAY – “SALT OF THE EARTH”

Famed and enigmatic British singer-songwriter Bill Fay’s new album, Countless Branches, is out next week and here’s one more track from it before the album drops in full. “Salt of the Earth” is little more than piano and atmospheric keyboards, but you don’t really need more when you have a voice as effortlessly emotive as Bill’s.

JONATHAN WILSON – “IN HEAVEN MAKING LOVE”

Singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson will release new album, Dixie Blur, on March 6 via Bella Union and he’s just released this twangy new single. “I wanted to write a song about a perfect evening, something worth remembering,” says Jonathan. “A song about carrying letters of rock & roll freedom all over the world… So I did. We were In Heaven Making Love on a Saturday night, you were laughing it was hot and everything was alright… ‘I been high, I been low, I’ve been everything between. I’ve been trying to have a little fun…'”

GUIDED BY VOICES – “VOLCANO”

Guided by Voices released three albums in 2019, and one week into 2020 they’ve just announced a new one, titled Surrender Your Poppy Field, that will be out in February.

AGNES OBEL – “BROKEN SLEEP”

Danish musician and songwriter Agnes Obel releases her fourth LP, Myopia, next month, and from it she’s shared another new single, the richly chamber pop track “Broken Sleep.” “This song was, surprisingly enough, written in a period where I was struggling with falling asleep,” Agnes says. “In the effort to find a cure I began to read about the science of sleep as well as the cultural history of sleep which led me to the ancient idea that sleep and death are familiar states and problems with sleep are linked to a fear of death. Relics of this idea are still to be found in our language today, in the way we describe both death and sleep.”

IDK – “HELLO FREESTYLE (PT.4) (PROD. JPEGMAFIA)

IDK continues his annual tradition of kicking the new year off with a new freestyle, and this time it’s the JPEGMAFIA-produced “HELLO FREESTYLE (PT.4).” It’s IDK’s first new music since 2019’s very solid Is He Real?, and it’s more heat from IDK.

KNXWLEDGE – “DO YOU”

LA beatmaker Knxwledge (Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, etc) has dropped his first new song of 2020, and it’s a gooey, infectious blend of hip hop, jazz, and psychedelia.

HETHER FORTUNE & CREMATION LILY – “THIS SONG BROUGHT TO YOU BY A FALLING BOMB” (THURSDAY COVER)

Having both just contributed to the La Dispute remix album, Hether Fortune (formerly of Wax Idols) and ambient/power electronics artist Cremation Lily have now teamed up to cover another post-hardcore band, Thursday. They put a warped, electronic twist on the song, making it a far cry from the 2003 original, but the core melodies remain. All proceeds from downloads go to Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.

TURNSTILE & MALL GRAB – SHARE A VIEW

It was already obvious from the Diplo feature on Turnstile’s great, genre-defying 2018 album TIME & SPACE that Turnstile saw some common ground between hardcore and dance music, and they’ve now taken that one step further with this new EP featuring remixes of three songs from that album by Australian electronic musician Mall Grab. Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates says, “This came to fruition by us just appreciating each other from afar. It feels refreshing to be able to share ideas like this together. All music is dance music.”

2 CHAINZ & SKOOLY – “VIRGIL DISCOUNT”

2 Chainz is following his great 2019 album Rap Or Go To The League with a new album from his T.R.U. crew (Skooly, Worl, Sleepy Rose, and Hott Locked N), No Face No Case, on February 7 via Atlantic. The first taste is “Virgil Discount,” which finds 2 Chainz in more of a hard-hitting, trap-inspired mode than the often-lush Rap Or Go To The League.

MURA MASA – “TEENAGE HEADACHE DREAMS” (ft. WOLF ALICE’s ELLIE ROWSELL)

Following his recent slowthai collab, Mura Masa has shared “Teenage Headache Dreams” (featuring Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell) off his upcoming album R.Y.C (Raw Youth Collage), and this one’s a punchy dose of electronic pop.

YOUR OLD DROOG – “CAKES” (ft. PRODIGY, prod. ALCHEMIST)

Your Old Droog follows his three 2019 albums with a new Alchemist-produced single, and it features a posthumous verse from the late, great Prodigy. Fans of ’90s-style New York rap do not wanna sleep on this one.

PHIL DEMMEL (ex-MACHINEHEAD/VIO-LENCE) – “THE PERMANENT DECAY”

Phil Demmel of the reunited Vio-lence and formerly of Machine Head has shared a new song that he originally wrote for Machine Head’s 2018 album Catharsis. He ended up recording it with drummer Dave McClain (of the reunited Sacred Reich and also formerly of Machine Head), bassist David Ellefson (Megadeth), and vocalist Brandan Schieppati (Bleeding Through). Demmel also notes, “This song will be the 1st released Digitally under Demmel’s ‘Echoes of Reckoning’ umbrella of music, a collection of songs with various artists covering various genres. Digital Release date TBA.”

RIPDEE – “SCOOTER” (ft. FREDDIE GIBBS & CASH LANSKY)

Freddie Gibbs follows up his very busy 2019 (which included his great new album with Madlib) by lending his voice to his new track by DJ Ripdee. Ripdee has a much more modern electronic style than Gibbs’ usual production comfort zone, but Gibbs still navigates the throbbing beat like a pro.

ATOM & HIS PACKAGE – “MONTANA” (JOHN LINNELL OF THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS COVER)

Quirky synth-pop-punkster Atom & His Package has released his first new song in 15 years, and it’s a cover of “Montana” by John Linnell of They Might Be Giants that he made for the TMBG tribute podcast This Might Be A Podcast. Atom & His Package is already a pretty likeminded artist to TMBG, but he still finds a way to make this song his own.

SAY HI – “LOOKACHU”

Need more quirky lo-fi synthpop? The eighth single off Say Hi’s upcoming Diamonds & Donuts is here and it’s got a video too.

GEORGIA – “24 HOURS”

UK producer, singer, songwriter and drummer Georgia releases a new album, Seeking Thrills, on Friday; ahead of that she’s shared one more new single, the dancefloor-ready bop “24 Hours” which she says is about Berlin’s party scene.

HYBORIAN – “PLANET DESTRUCTOR”

Kansas City sludge metallers are releasing their new album Volume II on March 20 via Season of Mist, and it’ll be accompanied by a 224-page sci-fi novel by guitarist/vocalist Martin Bush called The Traveller. The first single is the riffy, High on Fire-esque “Planet Destructor.”

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE – “HAUNTED AND KNOWN”

Ben Chasny will be back with Companion Rises, his first Six Organs of Admittance first album in three years, on February 21 via Drag City. This is the second single.

BURIAL WAVES (mem PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH) – “CINEMA SHAME”

Pianos Become the Teeth singer Kyle Durfey has a new band with members of We Were Black Clouds, Deleted Scenes, The Effects, Flavor Waster, and more, and their first song is the sweeping, intense “Cinema Shame.” You can read more about the project here.

FRAIL HANDS – PARTED/DEPARTED/APART (ALBUM STREAM)

Novia Scotia screamo band Frail Hands are following their great 2017 self-titled debut album and 2018 split with Ghost Spirit with their sophomore LP, parted/departed/apart, this Friday (1/10) via Twelve Gauge, but you can hear the whole thing now and read more about it here.

SIGHTLESS PIT (LINGUA IGNOTA, THE BODY, FULL OF HELL) – “KINGSCORPSE”

Sightless Pit is the new collaborative project of Lee Buford (The Body), Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota), and Dylan Walker (Full of Hell), and the trio is set to release their debut album, Grave of a Dog, on February 21 via Thrill Jockey. The first single is “Kingscorpse,” which pretty much sounds like what you’d expect from these three: noisy, horrific, and strangely accessible.

GLADIE (ex-CAYETANA) – “A PACE FAR DIFFERENT”

Former Cayetana singer Augusta Koch’s newer band Gladie (who also feature members of Three Man Cannon, Modern Baseball, and The Spirit of the Beehive) announced a new album today, and you can read more about lead single “A Pace Far Different” here.

FOTOCRIME (mem COLISEUM) – “LOVE IS A DEVIL”

Fotocrime is the goth solo project of Coliseum frontman Ryan Patterson, and he’s set to follow his 2018 debut album Principle of Pain with South of Heaven on March 13 via Profound Lore. Today, he released first single “Love Is A Devil.”
