26 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

FOUR TET – “DREAMER”

Four Tet has been releasing a steady stream of singles lately and here’s another: “Dreamer” is bubbly and dreamy and colorful, much the like t-shirts hanging on the line in its artwork.

CEREMONY – “IN THE SPIRIT WORLD NOW”

L.A. band Ceremony will release new, Will Yip-produced album In the Spirit World Now on August 23 via Relapse. They’ve just shared the video for its new wave-y title track. “The spirit world came about through the reading of Saul Bellow’s ‘Humboldt’s Gift’,” says frontman Ross Farrar. “The novel’s fictitious character, Von Humboldt Fleisher, writes a long letter to the protagonist, Charlie Citrine, which announces, We are not natural beings, but supernatural beings. I understood it as a moment of praise and ran away with it.”

WESTERMAN – “KATHY’S SONG” (SIMON & GARFUNKEL COVER)

UK artist Westerman, who is working on his debut full-length, just released this gorgeous, understated cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Kathy’s Song” (which was originally on Sounds of Silence). It’s from a new covers compilation titled 4 Down which will also feature M.T Hadley, Nautic and comp curator/producer Bullion covering Paul Simon, XTC, Mazzy Star, Fleetwood Mac, and more. The album’s out October 18 via DEEK Recordings.

MOLLY SARLÉ – “SUDDENLY”

Mountain Man member Molly Sarlé is releasing her debut solo LP, Karaoke Angel, due out September 20 via Partisan. She wrote the album, which Sam Evian produced, over three years, traveling from Big Sur to a monastery, and from home in Durham NC to a church/recording studio in Woodstock. New single “Suddenly” “is a song about realizing you’ve been performing sex for someone else rather than experiencing it yourself,” she says, although she also clarifies on Facebook, “contrary to popular opinion this song is NOT about me making grilled cheese and sucking a dick. Lol. Had to say it. HAD TO SAY IT. So please if that’s your first impression listen to it again.” She’ll be touring in support of it through November, including, separately, dates with her Mountain Man bandmates’ projects Sylvan Esso and Daughter of Swords, as well as Bedouine and Gia Margaret. See all of her upcoming dates, which include a headlining show at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on October 17, here.

FUTURE TEENS – “FREQUENT CRIER”

Boston indie-punks Future Teens announced their new album Breakup Season, due on September 6 via Triple Crown/Take This To Heart, and along with the announcement they shared new single “Frequent Crier.” It’s a very catchy dose of emo-tinged indie rock that may be inspired by sadness but gets through it with this upbeat, happy-sounding, catchy as hell song.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS – “BE GOOD”

Minneapolis punks Off With Their Heads have shared the title track off their upcoming album Be Good (due 8/16 via Epitaph), and this one’s a gravelly-voiced, anthemic punk rager that Hot Water Music fans should definitely check out.

SACRED REICH – “MANIFEST REALITY”

Sacred Reich have shared a second single off their first album in 23 years, and like the previous single, it sees the thrash veterans doing what they do best.

LITTLE SCREAM – “DEAR LEADER”

Montreal’s Laurel Sprengelmeyer is releasing a new album as Little Scream, Speed Queen, due out October 25 via Merge. First single “Dear Leader” is accompanied by a video made up, as Laurel says, “largely from crowd-sourced submissions from friends around the world, from São Paulo, Paris, and Barcelona to Des Moines, all shot on a phone. Many artists are pictured, but many are people I encountered while working on the video with documentary filmmaker Shannon Walsh. She and I approached people on the street and heard many interesting stories along the way, from the native man from Bella Bella who told us about being told to ‘go back to where you came from’ (he jumped and replied, ‘I’m here’), to a man paying homage to lost friends at the AIDS memorial at Sunset Beach in Vancouver, to a group of young people returning from a rally to support LGBTQIA rights. Much of the protest footage was shot by Shannon herself while in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Movement protests of 2014. I would like to use the launch of this video to raise awareness about the 1000 Cities initiative—something being spearheaded by musician and environmentalist Becky Foon (pictured in the video) and Jesse Paris Smith. It’s a simple concept with a powerful message: If 1000 cities around the world adopt Paris climate accord standards, the world can still meet its global emissions targets. The idea is not to just sign a petition, but to get involved in supporting and advocating for zero-emissions targets with specific timeline commitments in our own cities and communities. It’s a way of empowering all of us to be part of reversing climate change.

EYE FLYS (mem FULL OF HELL) – “STEMS”

Eye Flys is the quartet of Spencer Hazard (Full of Hell), Jake Smith (Backslider), and Kevin Bernsten (Triac), and Patrick Forrest, and their debut EP Context comes out September 13 via Thrill Jockey. The first single is “Stems,” which is a bulldozing dose of hardcore-tinged sludge.

LEDGE – “WE SUFFER”

Ledge (the current band of former Weekend Nachos frontman John Hoffman) have shared another single off their sophomore album All I Hope For (due August 30 via Translation Loss), and it’s another ugly-sounding blend of grind and sludge. “The song ‘We Suffer’ is about addiction and the toll it takes on family and friends,” Hoffman told Revolver. “It was meant to capture that point where hurt turns into resentment. You sacrifice your own time and energy to care for someone you love but end up taking their abuse and neglect for so long that you start to see the forest for the trees.”

LURAY – “GREEN AND GOLDEN”

Richmond, VA’s Shannon Carey is releasing Dig, her new album as Luray, which was produced by her brother, Bon Iver member and solo musician S. Carey, later this month via 6131 Records. She’s shared another new song, “Green and Golden,” which fits right in with the slightly twangy, folky feel of the album’s previous singles. Shannon is playing some shows to support Dig, beginning in August, and including stops in Washington DC, Eau Claire WI, Chicago, and NYC (Rockwood Music Hall on 10/9). See all of her upcoming dates here.

CULTED – “DIRT BLACK CHALICE”

Canada and Sweden based band Culted are releasing the Vespertina Synaxis – A Prayer for Union & Emptiness EP on August 30 via Season of Mist, and a four-minute clip of the ten-minute “Dirt Black Chalice” is streaming now. The song falls somewhere between doom, sludge, industrial, and noise, and it’s pretty killer stuff.

CITY GIRLS & SAWEETIE – “COME ON”

Quality Control is releasing a new compilation, Quality Control: Control The Streets Volume 2, this year, and two songs are streaming now. One is this fiery new collab from City Girls and Saweetie, which sounds like an instant party-starter.

LIL BABY & DABABY – “BABY”

The other song released from the Quality Control comp is one by Lil Baby and DaBaby called “Baby.” (Yo dawg…) Lil Baby starts the song off with his usual auto-tuned sing-rap, but then DaBaby comes in spitting bars that remind you why he’s one of the best new rappers of the year.

CHARLI XCX – “GONE” FEAT. CHRISTINE & THE QUEENS

Charli XCX and Christine & The Queens join forces on this new banger and its accompanying video, which is a sensory overload with fire, rain, and bondage on a car.

TEEBS – “MIRROR MEMORY”

A member ‘My Hollow Drum’ Collective and part of the Brainfeeder roster, Teebs has just shared this moody, shuffling, string-filled new track via Adult Swim Singles. Lovely stuff, especially when the strings go high.

NIGHT SINS – “ANNIHILATOR”

Nothing drummer Kyle Kimball also makes industrial/EBM influenced music with his Night Sins solo project. He’s just about to release his fourth album under that banner, Portrait in Silver, on September 6 via Funeral Party Records and here an early blast. “Annihilator” plays to its title, owing more than a little to Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and the like. Watch the video, which looks like it was filmed in a late-’80s goth club, below.

DRAG THEM DOWN (mem AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED) – “VIOLENT”

Drag Them Down is another project from John Jarvis of Agoraphobic Nosebleed (and Scour), and he’ll release its self-titled album on August 30. The first single is the grinding attack of “Violent.”

VIVIAN GIRLS – “SICK”

After breaking up five years ago and all individually leaving Brooklyn for Los Angeles, Vivian Girls have reformed and will release their first album in eight years this September. The first single is very promising. Welcome back, Vivian Girls!

TWIN PEAKS – “DANCE THROUGH IT”

Twin Peaks have just announced their first album in three years which will be out in September. They worked with veteran producer Ethan Johns who pulls them into almost Steely Dan territory on this first single.

CHAMBER – “REPLACING EVERY WEAKNESS”

Nashville mathy metalcore crew Chamber have signed to Pure Noise and released the Ripping / Pulling / Tearing compilation which features songs from their previous EP and 7″ as well as the just-released skullcrusher, “Replacing Every Weakness.”

INUS – “WE ARE OUR COMPUTERS’ GENITALIA”

INUS (aka The Institute for Navigating the Universal Self) features The Locust member Bobby Bray, and their new album Western Spaghettification comes out August 9 via The Locust frontman Justin Pearson’s Three One G label, whose press release calls them “a pre-postapocalyptic, post-honky-tonk-prog-skronk, space Tropicalia, math-lounge powersilence trio.” You can read more here.

FREEZING COLD – “NEW WAYS TO WAIT”

Freezing Cold is a new-ish band with some familiar faces from the NYC punk scene: Jeff Cunningham (Bridge and Tunnel), Angie Boylan (Aye Nako, Little Lungs), and Nick Rice (Weed Hounds). Their debut album Glimmer was produced by Jawbox’s J Robbins, and it comes out September 28 via Salinas Records. Read more about new single “New Ways To Wait” here.
