28 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
YUNA – “CASTAWAY” (ft. TYLER, THE CREATOR)
Malaysian pop/R&B singer Yuna’s new album Rouge is out today on Verve Forecast, and, among other things, it features Tyler, the Creator on the song “Castaway.” (It also features Little Simz on previously released single “Pink Youth.”) It’s a smooth-sounding song, and it suits Tyler’s style well.

COMMON – “HERCULES” (ft. SWIZZ BEATZ, video starring VINCE STAPLES)
Rap vet Common announced a new album, Let Love, due August 30 via Loma Vista, and along with the announcement, he released new single “Hercules.” It features Swizz Beatz and the video stars Vince Staples as a convenience store cashier. The album also features recent single “H.E.R. Love” (ft. Daniel Caesar and Dwele).

JAY SOM – “TENDERNESS”
Jay Som’s Melina Duterte says her new single “Tenderness” is “definitely about scrolling on your phone and seeing a person and it just haunts you, you can’t escape it,” adding, “I have a weird relationship to social media and how people perceive me-as this person that has a platform, as a solo artist, and this marginalized person. That was really getting to me. I wanted to express those emotions, but I felt stifled. I feel like a lot of the themes of the songs stemmed from bottled up emotions, frustration with yourself, and acceptance.” She juxtaoses these themes against a sunny, laid back and groovy track. Jay Som’s new album Anak Ko is out in August.

SHERYL CROW – “EVERYTHING IS BROKEN” (BOB DYLAN COVER, FEAT. JASON ISBELL)
For her new album Threads, due out August 30, Sheryl Crow says, “I decided to record a Bob Dylan song, ‘Everything Is Broken,’ as a tribute to Bob, and I asked Jason Isbell to help. Jason is wildly talented and has a unique perspective that I am inspired by, he just kills on this song.” Jason says, “Steve Jordan produced and played drums, Sheryl played the killer harmonica parts, and I played the Red Eye Les Paul through an old tweed Fender amp. Doesn’t get more fun than that.”

TYCHO – WEATHER (ALBUM STREAM)
Tycho added a new element to their blissed out sound on Weather — vocals. Saint Sinner sings on five of the eight songs here and her airy voice fits in perfectly with Tycho’s effervescent style.

PURPLE MOUNTAINS – “THAT’S JUST THE WAY THAT I FEEL”
“Things have not been going well,” sings David Berman on “That’s Just the Way That I Feel,” the opening track of his fantastic debut album as Purple Mountains. The song doubles as a catch-up to to any questions of “What have you been doing in the 10 years since you lit a match to Silver Jews and pulled a JD Salinger?” In his typical dark-humored style, Berman recounts a “decade playing chicken with oblivion,” with much of his faith destroyed, nearly losing his “genitalia to an anthill in Des Moines” and watching his “foes enjoy ceaseless feasts of schadenfreude.” All to an ace honky tonk country backing. DEVON WELSH – “WAR”
Former Majical Cloudz vocalist Devon Welsh has been following his excellent solo debut Dream Songs with a series of new songs. Today he’s shared the stirring, resonant “War.”

FLOATING POINTS – “COORABELL”
UK producer Floating Points’ new 12″, which brings him back to his dance music roots, is out today and you may have heard the appealing “Les Alpx” already but this is the flipside. Says Floating Points alter ego Sam Shepherd, “Coorabell” is “named after the place it was born & one of the most beautiful spots in New South Wales my friend Jono Ma (Jaguar Ma) took me to earlier this year.”

SASAMI – “I’M IN LOVE WITH A GIRL” (BIG STAR COVER)
Former Cherry Glazerr keyboardist SASAMI released her solo debut earlier this year, and now she’s shared this solo acoustic take on Big Star. “I love the whole Radio City album, and there is something to be said about the magic of an album’s ender — especially a brief and unfeigned acoustic number that’s over before it hardly began,” SASAMI says. “[Alex] Chilton’s writing is admirable because the songs are loaded but not whiny — a delicate and beautiful place to be.”

PRURIENT – GARDEN OF THE MUTILATED PARATROOPERS
Noise great Prurient is back with Garden Of The Mutilated Paratroopers, a “limited 2x FAN CD EP of Airborne Electronics for the 75th anniversary of Screaming Eagles Radio and 82nd Neptune Death Row. Adrenaline drones, memorial distortion, windy feedback, loud speaker vocals with a heavy influence from the naked and neither fact-nor-fiction black humor drama forgotten style of Aquifer Sodality and Slaughter Productions.”

FUTURE – “100 SHOOTERS” (ft. MEEK MILL & DOE BOY)
Not only are Future and Meek Mill teaming up for the Legendary Nights Tour, they’ve also teamed up for this new single. “100 Shooters” puts more of a hop in Future’s step than he’s had lately, and the renaissance of great Meek Mill verses continues.

COARSE – “THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK VS. COARSE”
Coarse is the collaborative project of Ryan Knowles (ex-Capsize) and Brandon Gallagher (ex-Old Wounds), and they’re releasing the Cut and Preserved EP on August 23 via 6131. It includes remixes of three songs from their 2018 EP I, featuring members of The Armed, Street Sects, and Hash Gordon, and it also includes the new song “The People of the State of New York vs. Coarse.” It’s a filthy dose of dissonant, brutal hardcore, and very worth hearing.

RA RA RIOT – “WAR & FAMINE”
Ra Ra Riot have a new album, Superbloom, due out August 9 via Rob the Rich Recordlings/Caroline. New single “War & Famine” is more varied and atmospheric than other songs we’ve heard from the album, with vocalist Wes Miles’ falsetto playing a starring role.

LEEWAY NYC – “MESSAGE TO A MANCHILD” & “I’M YOUR PUSHER”
Leeway NYC (the current name of the current lineup of veteran NYC crossover band Leeway, featuring only vocalist Eddie Sutton from the classic lineup) are back with a new 7″ single. If you purchase it, you get instant downloads of “Message To A Manchild” and “I’m Your Pusher,” and if you don’t, you can still hear the latter.

BLACK MEKON – “IMMUNITY”
UK garage punk duo Black Mekon recently became a trio and will release their new album Destroy Nostalgia via PNKSLM on August 16. First single is this ripper that should appeal to fans of Jon Spencer and Guitar Wolf.

NAS – “JARREAU OF RAP (SKATT ATTACK)”
Nas is releasing a sequel to 2002’s The Lost Tapes, titled The Lost Tapes 2, next week (7/19) It features unreleased songs from the sessions for Hip-Hop is Dead (2006), Untitled (2008) and Life is Good (2012), including the just-released “Jarreau of Rap (Skatt Attack).” It’s a jazz-influenced song produced by Eddie Cole and featuring the late soul singer Al Jarreau and jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold.

FIONN REGAN – “COLLAR OF FUR”
Fionn Regan’s new album Cala comes out August 9 via Abbey Records. We recently posted a solo acoustic video of him performing lead single “Collar of Fur,” and now the official studio version is here. It’s a little more fleshed-out than the solo acoustic version, but still quiet and tender and stripped-back. It’s a lovely song.

IMPERIAL TEEN – NOW WE ARE TIMELESS (ALBUM STREAM)
Imperial Teen, the synthy indie rock band featuring Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum, are back with their first album in seven years that has them sounding like no time has passed at all. Party rock with a brain and a heart.

VANDANA – “AHSA [RAAT BAAK]”
India-born, Brooklyn-based artist Vandana makes pop that melds traditional Indian/Pakistani music with gothy, electronic postpunk. The video for alluring new single “Ahsa” was filmed in Jordan, where Vandana and her crew were actually arrested while filming, “due to local officials fearing the group was practicing witchcraft at a ruin in Petra.”

FLORA HIBBERD – “IN VIOLENCE”
UK singer-songwriter Flora Hibberd calls Paris home these days, making dark ethereal folk that recalls Nick Cave, Joan Baez and Jacques Brel. She released “The Absentee” back in March and now here’ her second single, “In Violence,” which Flora says. “comes from anger, specifically about something that I witnessed happen to a friend, and more generally about all the people that are put in that position every day. It is painful, but I don’t think it is entirely dark. There is power in the anger.”

GAUCHE – A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF GAUCHE
DC band Gauche, which includes members of Priests and Downtown Boys, unsurprisingly (given the lineage) make shouty, danceable postpunk with a message. Also unsurprisingly, they’re really good at it, as their Merge debut shows.

OPETH – “HEART IN HAND”
Prog metal vets Opeth announced a new album and released English and Swedish language versions of lead single “Heart In Hand.” You can read more about that song and the rest of the album here.

EXHORDER – “MY TIME”
New Orleans thrash vets Exhorder announced their first album in 27 years, and you can read more about the ripping lead single “My Time” here.

LUNCH LADY – “WINDOW”
Juan Velasquez, who was in Abe Vigoda and Roses, and friend Rachel Birke of Heller Keller, decided they wanted to start a new musical project together, hitting on the idea that it should be “a kind of love letter to Kitsch.” They keep the kitsch to the lyrics and name, while delivering taut, post-punk grooves. This is the first single from their upcoming debut LP.

DAVID WAX MUSEUM – “UNCOVER THE GOLD”
Indie folk duo David Wax Museum’s Carl Broemel-produced album Line of Light comes out in August, and you can read more about new single “Uncover the Gold” here.

COCKROACH CLAN – “BELIEVER” & “GOING TO GEORGIA” (MOUNTAIN GOATS COVER)
Cockroach Clan, the punk band that former Mayhem vocalist Eirik “Billy” Norheim aka Messiah aka Billy Cockroach formed in the ’90s, are returning this year with their first album in 22 years. Two songs are out now, the original “Believer” and the Mountain Goats cover “Going to Georgia.” Read much more about the project here.

OF MONSTERS AND MEN – “WILD ROSES”
Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men will return with new album, Fever Dream, on July 26 and have just shared this anthemic new single. Say the band, “The song shows an introverted side to the album and is influenced by a bit of dance music and Joseph Campbell’s “The power of myth and what it is like to lean into your sadness.”
