Mountain Man White Christmas

28 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

ALEX SOMERS – “HONEY BOY SOUNDTRACK”

Musician and composer Alex Somers recently toured and put out a new album with his partner Jonsi of Sigur Ros, but he’s also been busy working on the score for the upcoming film Honey Boy, which hits theaters today. The movie features a screenplay written by Shia LaBoeuf about his relationship with his father, and Alex’s orchestrations seem like they’ll be a good fit for the emotional film.

THURSTON MOORE – “POLLINATION”

Thurston Moore is in the midst of releasing a new 7″ series, and the each one features a recent live recording mixed by experimental musician Wobbly backed by his previously released cover of New Order’s “Leave Me Alone.” “Pollination” is the first of those Wobbly-mixed live recordings to be released.

ROISIN MURPHY – “NARCISSUS”

In addition to the vinyl reissue of Moloko’s final album, Statues, Roisin Murphy also shared a new single, which finds her collaborating again with DJ Parrot, who also worked on her last single “Incapable.” “The themes in ‘Narcissus’ and ‘Incapable’ are different sides of the same coin,” Roisin says. “In ‘Incapable’ the archetype was the cold narcissist, idly wondering, in a purely self interested way, if she is missing out on something? With love beyond her grasp. In ‘Narcissus’ the voice is the eternal and primal presence of the Nymph, endlessly trying to wake you out of your you-dream. Calling for abandon, prescribing chaos over control and warning of the dreadful, imminent DANGER IN THE MIRROR.”

ANDREW BIRD – “HARK! EP”

Andrew Bird is the latest musician to get into the Christmas spirit early, as he’s released this new EP where he puts a folkier spin on holiday classics, accompanied by a funny announcement video. And yes, there’s whistling.

KEVIN MORBY – “BLUE CHRISTMAS”

Speaking of Christmas covers, Kevin Morby just shared this cover of Elvis Presley’s standard “Blue Christmas,” which is a more synthetic and drum machine-based take on the classic original. Kevin’s twangy vocal style also plays up the song’s nostalgic mood.

MOUNTAIN MAN – “WHITE CHRISTMAS”

Need even more indie Christmas music? Folk trio offer up a tender take on the classic “White Christmas.”

BLACK MIDI – “7-ELEVEN”

UK math rock breakouts Black Midi have shared a bonus track from this year’s Schlagenheim, which the band has performed live in the past under the name “Cameron’s Song.” It’s a bit more spacious than the other songs on the record, almost leaning in post-rock territory.

PRINCE – “DON’T LET HIM FOOL YA”

Prince’s estate has been steadily dropping tons of unreleased material from the late icon, with this newest track having circulated among fans in bootleg form for years, after initially being recorded during the 1999 sessions. The song will be featured on a massive, 5-CD reissue of the album, and it’s as funky as you’d expect.

KILO KISH – “NICE OUT”

Rapper and singer Kilo Kish is releasing a new EP, Redux, in December, which finds her working again with producer Ray Brady. She describes it as a “sister project” to her 2018 EP Mothe, and the newest single is the synthy “Nice Out.”

HIGHER POWER – “LOW SEASON”

UK band Higher Power blur the lines between real-deal hardcore and catchy alternative rock in a way that gave a lot of underground band fluke MTV/rock radio hits in the ’90s, and if you dig when heavy bands aren’t afraid to write good hooks, you don’t wanna sleep on their upcoming album 27 Miles Underwater, which is due January 24 via Roadrunner Records (who released records by a lot of those kinds of bands in the ’90s). Its latest single is “Low Season,” and it’s a rager.

TENNIS – “RUNNER”

“‘Runner’ is the first song we wrote for our new record,” the band’s Alaina Moore says. “It began as a guitar riff Patrick recorded while we were living off grid, anchored in a fisherman’s cove called San Juanico. The only instruments we had on board were an acoustic guitar and a drum sequencer, but the limitations seemed to work in our favor. Until that point we had no clear vision for our writing. The demo we recorded that day outlined the sound of our future, the first contours of our fifth full-length, called Swimmer, out February 14, 2020. There is more to come. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your first glimpse of our new record.”

DOGLEG – “FOX”

Michigan’s Dogleg have inked a deal with Triple Crown Records, who will release their new album Melee in 2020. Most details on the album are still TBA, but first here’s a new high-energy single that kinda sounds like early Joyce Manor and Title Fight with a little FIDLAR-style party punk in the mix too.

NERIJA – “WHERE IT ENDS AND BEGINS”

UK jazz collective Nérija — Nubya Garcia (tenor saxophone), Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet), Cassie Kinoshi (alto saxophone), Rosie Turton (trombone), Shirley Tetteh (guitar), Lizy Exell (drums) and Rio Kai (bass) — have shared the new single “Where It Ends and Begins,” a blissful new song from the same sessions that birthed their recent debut album Blume, which came out on Domino in August.

ATMOSPHERE – “BDE MAKA SKA”

Fresh off announcing a 2020 North American tour, Atmosphere are back with a new single, powered by some distorted psych-rock guitar.

GRISELDA – “CHEF DREDS”

The Griselda Records crew (Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher) are releasing their major label debut, W.W.C.D., on November 29 via Shady Records, and it’ll include this new song “Chef Dreds.” These guys have been on a roll all year, and this song is no different.

MOZZY – “I’LL NEVER TELL EM SHIT”

Sacramento rapper Mozzy continues his prolific reign with this downbeat, pensive new single.

KAROL G & NICKI MINAJ – “TUSA”

Colombian reggaeton singer Karol G taps Nicki Minaj — who raps and sings in both English and Spanish — for her new single “Tusa.”

LIL BABY – “WOAH”

Lil Baby pairs his auto-tuned, sing-songy raps with ominous trap production on the new “Woah.”

SODOM – “OUT OF THE FRONTLINE TRENCH”

German thrash legends (who are back with ’80s-era guitarist Frank Blackfire) have debuted the title track of their upcoming Out of the Frontline Trench, and like the previous single, this song sounds as bloodthirsty as Sodom’s classics.

OZZY OSBOURNE – “UNDER THE GRAVEYARD”

Ozzy Osbourne announced his first new album in ten years — made with producer/guitarist Andrew Watt (who co-produced the recent Ozzy/Post Malone song), Guns N’ Roses‘ Duff McKagan on bass, and Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Chad Smith on drums — and the first single is “Under the Graveyard.” Read more about it here.
