29 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS – “GOT YOU”

Australian hellions Amyl & The Smiffers have announced their self-titled debut album will be out May 24 via Rough Trade Records, ATO Records and Flightless Records. The first single is the anthemic, rocking “Got You.” The video for it has singer Amy Taylor taking full control of the rest of the band, bathing them with a hose, brushing their teeth by force and leading them around on leashes…which may or may not be an accurate depiction of tour life.

ANNA OF THE NORTH – “USED TO BE”

Speaking of mandatory baths, a number of very cute goods get groomed by Anna of the North in her new video “Used to Be.” Groovy beats and underbites abound. She’ll be on tour soon.

THE RACONTEURS – “HEY GYP (DIG THE SLOWNESS)” (DONOVAN COVER)

The new Raconteurs album Help Us Stranger is all new originals by Jack White and Brendan Benson…except for this Donovan cover. It’s decidedly different, and more revved up, than the 1965 original.

WILD SIDE – “STREET ACTION”

Wild Side are a relatively new hardcore band from Canada, but their new song “Street Action” could pass as a lost song from ’80s NYHC. It’s the lead single from their upcoming debut album Who The Hell Is Wild Side?, due May 7 via Triple B Records, and you can hear it in all its mosh-ready glory now.

KAYTRANADA & VANJESS – “DYSFUNCTIONAL”

Montreal producer Kaytranada is gearing up to release a new album, and its latest single is “Dysfunctional,” which features Nigerian-American R&B duo VanJess. Kaytranada offers up a clattering, bass-heavy, head-nodding beat, and VanJess’ lush voices sound great over it.

SUPA BWE – “REMEMORY” (ft. CHANCE THE RAPPER)

Supa Bwe’s Just Say Thank You EP is out today, and among other things, it includes the song “Rememory” featuring fellow Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper. Both rappers are more in singing mode on this one, and the melancholic, atmospheric backdrop matches that well.

LIZZO – “SHALLOW” (LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER COVER)

Lizzo shows off her powerful pipes on this solo take on Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit from A Star is Born, recorded during an appearance on The Morning Mashup on SiriusXM Hits1.

POTTERY – “THE CRAFT”

Montreal’s Pottery show off their mischievous side with the video for “The Craft,” the Wire-esque track from their forthcoming debut EP. In it, singer/guitarist Austin Boylan plays an alien who lands on earth and tries to assimilate into human culture by mimicking those he sees. It’s funny, its weird and fits the song’s mutant pop sensibilities

THE GOTOBEDS – “TWIN CITIES”

“If you’ve ever toured or spent long stretches of time with the same folks you know nerves can fray,” Gotobeds frontman Eli Kasan says of their new video. “We found a way to release that tension by macing each other for the video. Ever seen The Purge? Me neither, but it’s the same idea.” Don’t try this at home, but do dig Pavement-y vibes of this one which features backing vocals by Tracy Wilson of Positive No, Dahlia Seed and Ringfinger. The Gotobeds new album is out in May.

COM TRUISE – “PERSUASION SYSTEM”

Com Truise will be back with new album Persuasion System on May 17 via Ghostly and he’s just shared the titled. The record was born of change with Com’s alter ego, Seth Haley, switching digital workstation and rebuilt his palette of sounds, the result being decidedly different but eerily familiar.

THE MATTSON 2 – “ESSENCE”

SoCal duo The Mattson 2 will release their new album, Paradise, on June 7 via Company Records (which is run by Toro Y Moi). The first single is “Essence,” which sounds warm and warbly much like the VHS-shot video for the song. “The VHS film and the less-pristine nature of it gives something many of us can all connect to,” say the Mattsons, “the prized trophy we held and filmed our friends with while thumbing through CDs and VHS tapes at Circuit City, whilst maybe catching a free flick on the big screen in the cushy soundroom. Not to mention the musicianship is shown at a level reminiscent of live performance.”

CHARLY BLISS – “HARD TO BELIEVE”

Charly Bliss release their sophomore album, Young Enough, on May 10, and they’ve shared a new single from it, “Hard to Believe.” It’s a little more guitar-oriented than synthy first single “Capacity,” and Eva Hendricks says, “Sam wrote the guitar riff very early on in the writing process of Young Enough and we’ve always been obsessed with playing it because it’s so insanely catchy.” She also says the song is “about being addicted to a bad relationship, and the endless cycle of trying and failing to end one.”

CHLOE X HALLE – “BE YOURSELF”

Beyonce proteges Chloe x Halle have shared a new track, “Be Yourself,” off the soundtrack to Little. Speaking about the song, they told Complex, “we are so proud of our friend Marsai [the film’s executive producer] and everything she stands for. This song is all about female empowerment and Black Girl Magic. We wrote this song with another female duo, Nova Wav, and wanted it to reflect the power and strength of the women that this movie portrays.”

OUTER SPACES – “TEAPOT #1”

Baltimore, MD’s Outer Spaces have shared the A-side from their upcoming single Teapot #1 b/w Children Love To Run; it’s due out May 3 via Saddle Creek’s Document Series, which features unreleased music from outside the label’s roster, released with zines curated by the artists. About “Teapot #1,” Outer Spaces songwriter Cara Beth Satalino says, “I wrote ‘Teapot #1’ while ruminating over feelings of detachment, and uncertainty about my role in this life. Ultimately, the song is about letting go of that need to define yourself as one thing or another, and finding love for yourself as you are.”

CONFINES – GEOGRAPHY OF NOWHERE 1 (EP STREAM)

Though you probably best know David Castillo as frontman of the post-hardcore bands Primitive Weapons and White Widows Pact, or from seeing him walking around Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar, which he co-owns, he now also makes dark, danceable, industrial-tinged electronic music as Confines, and you can stream his new three-song EP here.

KRYPTS – “THE REEK OF LOSS”

Finland’s Krypts are releasing their third album Cadaver Circulation on May 31 via Dark Descent Records, and lead single “The Reek of Loss” is streaming now. It’s an atmospheric dose of death doom, but with a thrashy mid-section to change things up.

TRUTH CLUB – “TETHERING”

Raleigh, NC’s Truth Club are releasing their debut album Not An Exit on May 3 via Tiny Engines, and new single “Tethering” is out now. It starts off as a lazy, slacker rock song that fans of early Porches or (Sandy) Alex G might dig, but Travis Harrington brings his voice to a roar in the chorus which veers more towards punky alt-rock territory.

PLAGUE VENDOR – “ALL OF THE ABOVE”

If the new Raconteurs isn’t enough fast and loose garage rock for you, this new Plague Vendor song off their upcoming album By Night (due 6/7 via Epitaph) should do the trick.

MATTHEW MILIA – “CONGRATULATIONS HONEY”

Frontier Ruckus frontman Matthew Milia has released another song off his upcoming debut solo album Alone at St. Hugo, and this one’s fleshed out by some nicely twangy pedal steel.

BIG BUSINESS – THE BEAST YOU ARE (ALBUM STREAM)

Long-running sludge duo Big Business’ anticipated new album The Beast You Are comes out this Friday via Joyful Noise, and the whole thing is streaming now. It’s got some of the duo’s catchiest songs yet, but plenty of psychedelic and crushingly heavy moments too.

VAURA – “BASILISK – THE INFINITE CORPSE”

Vaura — the Brooklyn collective featuring Josh Strawn (Azar Swan) on vocals, guitar and synthesizers, Kevin Hufnagel (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia) on guitar, Toby Driver (Kayo Dot) on bass, and Charlie Schmid (Tombs) on drums and electronics — have shared another song from their upcoming album Sables (due 4/26 via Profound Lore, and Josh Strawn tells Revolver that this one was inspired by the late Scott Walker: “On a song like ‘Basilisk’ I feel like I was almost trying to imagine what a connective tissue between ‘Climate of Hunter and Tilt might have sounded like. The record in-between that never was. Like what if the intro to ‘The Man From Reno’ departed from those ambient synth pads into the realms of ‘See You Don’t Bump His Head,’ and ‘The Cockfighter.’ I even remember when Toby made those strange wailing noises with his bass thinking of that creepy animalistic screech on ‘Jolson and Jones.’ For me those records really are what other artists say Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper were to them, they’re like endless blueprints. They’re the keys to a wondrous subterranean kingdom.”

CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM – “DON’T GO FAR”

UK singer/songwriter Charlie Cunningham will release his sophomore album Permanent Way on June 7 via BMG and it features his two recent singles “Permanent Way” and “Sink In” (the latter featuring three members of The Maccabees), as well as the new “Don’t Go Far.” This one was produced by Rodaidh McDonald (who’s worked with The xx, Hot Chip, Sampha, King Krule, and many others), and it’s another calming, airy dose of Charlie Cunningham’s nylon-string indie folk.

BARONESS – “SEASONS”

“Seasons” is the second single from Baroness’ anticipated new album Gold & Grey, and we wrote more about it here.

YEASAYER – “LET ME LISTEN IN ON YOU” & “FLUTTERING IN THE FLOODLIGHTS”

Yeasayer have announced their new album and shared two more songs from it. You can read more here.

ABBATH – “HARVEST PYRE”

Abbath, the current band of Immortal vocalist Abbath Doom Occulta, are releasing their anticipated sophomore album Outstrider on July 5 via Season of Mist, and we wrote more about lead single “Harvest Pyre” here.

BIG NOTHING – “REAL NAME”

Big Nothing (mem Spraynard, Casual, Crybaby, Young Livers) are releasing their debut album Chris on May 10 via Salinas, and we wrote more about lead single “Real Name” here.

ZAUM – “PANTHEON”

Canada’s Zaum make Eastern-tinged psychedelic doom that’s earned them plenty of Om comparisons, and they’re gearing up to release their third album Divination on May 10 via Listenable Records in North America (and April 26 in Europe). We wrote more about lead single “Pantheon” here.

MODEL ZERO – “GIFT OF LIES”

Memphis band Model Zero, which features members of Ex-Cult, Aquarian Blood, and Jack Oblivian’s backing band The Sheiks, mix garage rock with vintage electronics for a post-apocalyptic party band sound. Read more about them here.
