30 New Metal & Hardcore Songs Out This Week

What. A. Week. Thankfully, along with all the craziness going on in the world, it’s been a great week for new music. I wrote about some of this week’s metal and hardcore albums like Sweven, Crow Killer, The Fight, and Eye Flys in Notable Releases. Also, because of today’s Bandcamp COVID-19 fundraiser, there are several special/exclusive Bandcamp releases out, including metal and metal-adjacent stuff like Marissa Nadler, Uniform & The Body, Pallbearer, Torche, Porcupine Tree, the Mania​/​Phobonoid split, samplers from Sacred Bones and Prosthetic, and more.

On top of all that, this week gave us new singles from Oranssi Pazuzu, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Krallice, Converge, Old Man Gloom, Oathbreaker (Jesu remix), Lamb of God, and more, plus some cool self-quarantine projects from The Armed, Devin Townsend, and Two Minutes to Late Night. ORANSSI PAZUZU – “UUSI TEKNOKRATIA”

Oranssi Pazuzu’s new song is over ten minutes of aural insanity that sounds like Can and Gong teaming up to make a black metal song or something totally improbable like that. The new album’s due in April; read more here.

The first taste of UK death-doom vets Paradise Lost’s anticipated new album has arrived and you can read more about it here.

KATATONIA – “BEHIND THE BLOOD”

Prog metal vets Katatonia have unleashed the second single off their upcoming 11th album City Burials. Speaking about “Behind The Blood,” vocalist Jonas Renkse says it’s “a celebration of the heavy metal music that we all grew up with, modified to fit the Katatonia universe. Whilst lyrically it is telling the tale of dark revelry, to awaken the blood with the sound and taste of thunder.” You can definitely hear a little of that classic heavy metal influence on this one, but it’s still distinctly a Katatonia song.

KRALLICE – “THE WHEEL”

Brooklyn avant-metallers Krallice confirmed they’ll release a new album this year, and it’ll feature “The Wheel” which you can read more about here.

CONVERGE – “ENDLESS ARROW”

“To keep people entertained in these challenging times, Converge present ‘Endless Arrow’; A over 30 minute ambient/experimental version of our song ‘Aimless Arrow’ created by Kurt Ballou,” writes Converge. Read more here.

TWO MINUTES TO LATE NIGHT + MEMBERS OF CONVERGE, CAVE IN, MUTOID MAN, KHEMMIS, THOU – “DARE TO BE STUPID” (WEIRD AL COVER)

In more related news, Two Minutes to Late Night, the heavy metal talk show that tapes at Brooklyn metal club Saint Vitus, got together some of their talented friends to all team up on a heavy metal cover of Weird Al‘s Devo parody “Dare To Be Stupid” from their individual bedrooms. Read more here.

OATHBREAKER – “EASE ME” (JESU REMIX)

Last year, Oathbreaker contributed the song “Ease Me” to Adult Swim’s Metal Swim 2, and now they’re releasing it on vinyl on May 8 via Deathwish (pre-order) backed by remixes of the track by Jesu, WIFE, Chelsea Wolfe, and Michael A. Muller. The original was already on the more atmospheric and less metal side for Oathbreaker, but Jesu’s just-released rework makes it even more so, and it’s just as worth hearing as the original.

LAMB OF GOD – “MEMENTO MORI”

Lamb of God have released the second single off their upcoming self-titled album, and you can read much more about it here.

ABYSMAL DAWN – “SOUL-SICK NATION”

LA death metallers’ Abysmawl Dawn’s new album Phylogenesis drops April 17 via Season of Mist, and here’s the third and final single. “This is a super heavy and groovy one. It’s the first time we’ve used 7 string guitars and the first time we’ve tuned to A standard,” says vocalist/guitarist/lyricist Charles Elliott. “Lyrically the song deals with inner demons and the mental health epidemic. Something that has touched so many people in my life, including myself.”

METAL CHURCH – “FOR NO REASON”

Metal Church have a new From the Vault compilation arriving April 10 via Rat Pak Records, which includes b-sides from 2018’s Damned If You Do, cover songs, live tracks, and a few new songs. Here’s one of the new ones.

THE ARMED – “APOCALYPSE SONG”

The Armed have posted a rough mix of an unfinished song and also provided the tracks that you yourself can download and finish the song for them while you’re isolated, self-quarantined, and/or social-distanced. Read more and get to work here.

GREG SAUNIER (DEERHOOF) – ANGEL RAT (VOIVOD ALBUM COVERED IN FULL)

With self-quarantine and social distancing in effect, many of us seem to have more time on our hands. Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier has put that to creative use by covering Angel Rat, the 1991 album by Canadian thrash greats Voivod, in full, acoustically. “Just in time for lockdown,” write Greg, continuing, “One of my favorite records of all time is Quebec thrash metal band Voivod’s 1991 release ANGEL RAT. Because of the extreme beauty and of its construction, I’ve been thinking since it came out that somebody should try a simple acoustic cover of the entire album. Now that the themes in the lyrics seem even more touchingly relevant in March 2020 than they were in 1991, I decided that the person to try it was me!”

TETEMA (MIKE PATTON + ANTHONY PATERAS) – “SOLILOQUY”

tētēma, the duo of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc) and composer Anthony Pateras shared this new song, and Pateras says, “No other band would combine microtonal buchla with hyperactive drumming to serenade Paganini and Leonard Cohen passed out in a hot tub.” True. Read more here.

THE ACACIA STRAIN – “SOLACE AND SERENITY” & “THE LUCID DREAM” (ft. JESS NYX of MORTALITY RATE)

The Acacia Strain have released another two-song single, and like the last one, this one’s got a very cool guest from a killer up-and-coming hardcore band: Jess Nyx of Calgary’s Mortality Rate. She and Vincent Bennett go back and forth on “The Lucid Dream,” and they sound pretty damn great together.

CHROME WAVES – “A FAIR WIND” / GRIDFAILURE – “DAY TERRORS”

Midwest blackgaze band Chrome Waves and NYC industrial act Gridfailure have a split coming out next week (3/27) and one song from each is out now. Chrome Waves’ is a soaring, nearly-15-minute song that finds them more or less in post-rock territory, and Gridfailure’s is much less pretty sounding. They contrast each other well.

GODEN – “TWILIGHT”

Goden is the new project of Stephen Flam of seminal death/doom band Winter and Serpentine Path, and this new band very literally picks up where Winter left off – they’re named after a Winter song, Flam started the project with leftover Winter riffs, and their upcoming album Beyond Darkness (due may 6 via Svart) references the title of Winter’s classic 1990 album Into Darkness. HEXVESSEL – “PHAEDRA”

Every single off the anticipated new Hexvessel album Kindred (due April 17 via Svart Records) has been different from the last and great in its own way. This one’s a dose of intense psychedelic rock.

DESTROYED IN SECONDS – “THE BADGE”

LA metalpunks Destroyed In Seconds (aka D.I.S.) take on the police state in America with this new song, which you can read about here.

ROTTING OUT – “STONES”

“Stones” is “a big fuck you to everyone who tried to adopt this ‘cool swag ghetto child’ vibe when they themselves are from suburbia,” Walter Delgado tells The Hard Noise, and it’s another kickass offering from their upcoming first album in seven years, Ronin.

GOUGE AWAY – “WAVE OF MUTILATION” (PIXIES COVER)

Florida punks Gouge Away are (obviously) named after the Pixies’ Doolittle closer, and today they’ve released a cover of a different song from that album. Read more here.

FYZICAL – 2020 DEMO

I can’t find out much info about FYZICAL at the moment, but they just dropped this four-song demo on the trusty Triple B Records, who point out they’re a new band from NYC and Omaha, and these songs are all raw, classic-style hardcore scorchers with a burly-voiced frontperson making things extra grimy.

FLUIDS – LITTLE VILLAGE

Phoenix, Arizona brutal death metallers Fluids dropped this new rager on Maggot Stomp today.

NOX FORMULAE – DRAKON DARSHAN SATAN

Greek black metallers Nox Formulae are releasing their new album next week on Dark Descent, but the whole thing is streaming a week early on Bandcamp (which is waiving its cut of sales today).

PLANET B – “BAD GIRLS” (M.I.A. COVER)

Planet B, the punk/rap/industrial/everything project from Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox, Dead Cross, etc) and producer Luke Henshaw, have put their unique twist on M.I.A.‘s modern classic “Bad Girls.” Read more here.

DISPIRIT – DELERIUM ANTIQUA

Post-Weakling project Dispirit has released this project on Bandcamp which currently has three songs but will have more as time goes on, as the band explains:

The first decade of Dispirit was primarily J. Gossard and P. Blair experimenting with various incarnations of bleak doom, raw black metal, and psychedelic improvisations. A whole heap of these sessions were recorded on both 4 track cassette and badly set up digital multi-track. While I am overly critical of the quality of many of these recordings due to hearing “fuck ups” all over the place, I realize some of these recordings are not without a strange charm. This “album” is where I will occasionally releasing some of these experimental recordings, but it is not any sort of complete album per se. It will be updated with new material, or possible some things removed, as time goes on and I sort through some of these old tracks. The majority of this material is entirely improvised, and there are occasional train wrecks in some material I may be uploading. Understand again, these are not completed works, but part of our creative process at the time, and meant as an insight to the bands origin.

All tracks will streamable/purchasable only on an individual basis, so people can skip any bullshit they can’t tolerate.

DEVIN TOWNSEND – “QUARANTINE”

Prog vet Devin Townsend is planning a series of projects to provide some relief during these quarantined times (“Twitch streams, concerts, perhaps a podcast…”), and the first one is this dreamy new song.

DEVIN TOWNSEND – “WE LIKE TO PARTY IN ISOLATION” (VENGABOYS COVER) & ZTV ROUGH TESTS

For the second edition of his “Quarantine Project,” prog vet Devin Townsend shared a cover of Vengaboys’ “We Like to Party (The Vengabus)” (“OK, so here’s an unmixed version of this song (I’ll mix it once I’ve got some video content) and I just threw together a dumb visual as a placeholder too,” he wrote. “The idea is: If you’re bored or self Isolated right now, have some fun and make some video footage and send it to me on twitter, then I’ll mix this and redo a compilation video.”) and the original footage of Ziltoid TV segments from the Z2: Dark Matters album.
