31 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BILL CALLAHAN – “IF YOU COULD TOUCH HER AT ALL” (LEE CLAYTON COVER) & “SO LONG MARIANNE” (LEONARD COHEN COVER)

Having released the great Shepherd In a Sheepskin Vest earlier this year, Bill Callahan is back with two lovely covers of classics: Lee Clayton’s ” “If You Could Touch Her at All” (which has been recorded by Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings, George Jones and others) and Leonard Cohen’s “So Long, Marianne.” Both get splashes of pedal steel and Bill makes really them his own.

HANUKKAH+ (including HAIM’s LEONARD COHEN COVER, a FLAMING LIPS song, more

Need more Leonard Cohen covers? HAIM’s got one on the new Hanukkah+ compilation, which also has new songs by Yo La Tengo, The Flaming Lips, Adam Green, Jack Black, Loudon Wainwright III, Craig Wedren, Alex Frankel (Holy Ghost!) and more. And for even more new Leonard Cohen, the late legend’s own new album is out today too.

STORMZY – “OWN IT” (ft. ED SHEERAN & BURNA BOY)

Shortly after announcing his anticipated new album Heavy Is The Head, Stormzy has shared the Ed Sheeran/Burna Boy collab from the LP. It’s more of a tender, sentimental song than the album’s previous singles, and Stormzy’s good at this kind of thing too.

MARILYN MANSON – “THE END” (THE DOORS COVER)

Marilyn Manson has released a very noir cover of The Doors’ “The End” (produced by Shooter Jennings), which he recorded for the upcoming TV adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, which Manson is also starring in. You might be thinking you never need to hear another Doors cover ever again, but this one is legitimately cool. Manson is also gearing up for a 2020 tour with Ozzy Osbourne

OZZY OSBOURNE – “STRAIGHT TO HELL” (ft. SLASH)

ISOBEL CAMPBELL – “HEY WORLD”

Onetime Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell releases There is No Other, her first solo album in a very long time, in January. New single “Hey World” is a sunny bit of sunshine pop, with a dose of ’60s girl group charm.

SRSQ – “TEMPORAL LOVE” & “UNKEPT”

Kennedy Ashlyn released her first album as SRSQ, Unreality, in 2018, two years after losing her closest friend and Them Are Us Too collaborator in the Ghost Ship fire. As she works on her second, she went into the studio with Jorge Elbrecht and made this 7″ single, which features the vivid-hued ’80s inspired “Temporal Love” and haunting “Unkept.”

BRYCE DESSNER – “POPE FRANCIS”

The National’s Bryce Dessner composed the score for upcoming film The Two Popes which stars Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis and will get a short theatrical run starting 11/27 before dropping on Netflix in December. (It’s not to be confused with HBO’s series The Young Pope and The New Pope,) Here’s Dessner’s bucolic theme for Pope Francis.

Luna have a new digital EP that collects of of their recent limited 7″ singles on Sonic Cathedral, PIAPTK and Feral Child. They include a few covers (Roy Orbison, The Monochrome Set, Velvet Underground), plus “Something in the Air” (with Sean Eden on lead vocal), instrumental “The Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt” and a remix of “Gin.”

WILLIAM FITZSIMMONS – “WHAT KIND OF LOVE IS LIKE THAT” (AARON ESPE COVER)
Whispery folk singer William Fitzsimmons has done a few interesting covers over the years, including a stripped down take on Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly” and a playful version of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl.” Likewise, William’s delicate take on this Aaron Espe track is a gorgeous, atmospheric affair that honors the original.

PARTYNEXTDOOR – “LOYAL” (ft. DRAKE)

Drake has hopped on a new song by his frequent collaborator PARTYNEXTDOOR, which finds both of them in chilled-out R&B mode.

SAY HI – “NON-LINEAR TIME VS. MISSHAPEN SPACE”

Say Hi has shared a second single off his upcoming album Diamonds & Donuts, and this one’s more of a soaring, anthemic song than the previous single.

ROD WAVE – “DARK CLOUDS”

Rod Wave has been rapidly rising since releasing his great new album Ghetto Gospel, and today the soulful singer-rapper keeps the momentum going with this syrupy new jam.

PAUL WALL & STATIK SELEKTAH – “OVERCAME” (ft. BENNY THE BUTCHER)

Paul Wall and Statik Selektah are releasing their new collab LP Give Thanks on Thanksgiving (when else?), and its new single “Overcame” features Benny the Butcher, who’s been on a roll this year.

CLARK – “BRANDING PROBLEM” / “LEGACY PET”

Chris Clark is back with a new two-song single featuring the thumping, buzzing “Branding Problem” and the more sputtering “Legacy Pet.”

FOXING – “GRAND PARADISE” (MIKE SHINODA REMIX)

Yes, a member of Linkin Park really did remix a Foxing song. Read more about it here.

PHOEBE BRIDGERS – “GEORGIA LEE” (TOM WAITS COVER)

The Tom Waits tribute album Come On Up To The House: Women Sing Waits is out today, and one of the major highlights is Phoebe Bridgers’ take on “Georgia Lee.” As with other covers she’s done, she really makes it her own to the point where, if you didn’t know any better, you might mistake it for a Phoebe Bridgers original.

WHITNEY – “FTA” & “FAR FAR AWAY” (WILCO COVER)

Whitney are releasing a new 7″ single to celebrate their upcoming sold-out, four-night hometown run at Chicago’s Thalia Hall. One side is “F.T.A.,” an alternate version of the title track from this year’s terrific Forever Turned Around, with a cover of Wilco’s “Far, Far Away” on the flip.

SASAMI – LIL DRMR BB (EP STREAM)

Sasami Ashworth brings dissonant drone and low-fi electronics to two holiday classics — “Little Drummer Boy,” “Silent Night” — and writes one of her own (“It’s You”) on this Christmas-themed EP.
