7 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LAURA STEVENSON – “THE MYSTIC & THE MASTER” AND “THE MAKER OF THINGS”

Some people get their mom flowers for their birthday, Laura Stevenson wrote her mother two songs. “I grew up watching my mom go through so much,” says Laura. “I just wanted to share this as a way of showing her my appreciation for everything she endured while raising me and my sister.” Both “The Mystic & The Master” and “The Maker of Things” are delicate and pretty, with some fantastic harmonies from Laura. It’s a gift that keeps on giving — all bandcamp sales of these songs benefit Safe Horizon, a non-profit organization that supports and empowers victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking.

GREAT FALLS – A SENSE OF REST (ALBUM STREAM)

Great Falls (whose lineup includes former members of Undertow, Nineironspitfire, Kiss It Goodbye, Playing Enemy, and Jesu) recorded their new album A Sense of Rest with Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Forn, Ghoul, Minsk), and there was additional recording done by grunge legend Tad Doyle. It’s a relentless collection of chaotic, dissonant post-hardcore, and it rips.

ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE – “SOMEWHERE FAR AWAY FROM HOME”

Angelo De Augustine has already shared a few songs from his upcoming Doveman-produced album, Tomb, which is due out January 18 via Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty Records. Here’s another: the hushed, atmospheric “Somewhere Far Away From Home.”

JHENE AIKO – “WASTED LOVE FREESTYLE”

R&B crooner Jhene Aiko is back with “Wasted Love Freestyle,” one of her most minimal, atmospheric songs yet with hints of early James Blake.

MATT POND & CHRIS HANSEN – “MERCY STREET” (PETER GABRIEL COVER)

Matt Pond and his Matt Pond PA bandmate Chris Hansen recorded a wonderful cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” which we wrote more about here.

OLD MEXICO (mem DEAD MEADOW) – “THE OLD ONES”

Dead Meadow frontman Jason Simon is 1/3 of the new psych-rock/free-jazz trio Old Mexico, whose debut single “The Old Ones” we wrote more about here.
