8 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

RAPSODY – “PHYLICIA” (ft. BUDDY)

Rapsody celebrated Mother’s Day with a song about her mother, “Phylicia,” featuring a hook from Compton rapper/singer Buddy. Over a head-nodding, funk-tinged beat from frequent collaborator 9th Wonder, Rapsody delivers sentimental lyrics about her mother and she sounds as sharp as ever in the process.

CITIZEN – “BIG MOUTH”

Post-hardcore staples Citizen are back with what appears to be a one-off single, produced by frontman Mat Kerekes and mixed by Interpol/The National collaborator Peter Katis. The song actually sees Citizen going a bit in the punchy Interpol (or Bloc Party) direction too, but still with their post-hc roots intact.

GOLDLINK – “ZULU SCREAMS” (ft. MALEEK BERRY, BIBI BOURELLY)

DC rapper GoldLink follows January’s “Got Muscle” with his second proper single of 2019, “Zulu Screams,” featuring Afro-pop singer Maleek Berry and R&B singer Bibi Bourelly (who, among other things, co-wrote Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money”). The song’s got an Afrobeat bounce that’s perfect for Maleek’s hook, and GoldLink’s rhymes sound great over this kind of thing too.

CLIFF MARTINEZ – “NAKED GUY MURDER”

Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has used composer Cliff Martinez for most of his projects, including Drive and The Neon Demon. That collaboration continues with Too Old to Die Young, a 10-episode original series that’s out June 14 via Amazon Prime. You can stream a part of the score, “Naked Guy Murder,” which mixes electronic and orchestral elements, below. The series stars Miles Teller, William Baldwin, John Hawkes, and Jena Malone — watch the trailer below:

KELLY MORAN – “LOVE BIRDS, NIGHT BIRDS, DEVIL BIRDS”

Kelly Moran’s new EP, Origin, is out this Friday and you can get an early taste via this atmospheric track, featuring the composer’s prepared piano, that comes courtesy Adult Swim Singles series.

KIM PETRAS – “SWEET SPOT”

Rising pop artist Kim Petras continues her recent series of singles with the bounciest, most irresistible entry yet, “Sweet Spot.”

GUARDS – “YOU GOT ME”

Guards are releasing their first album in six years, Modern Hymns, on May 22 via Kobalt. New single “You Got Me” “is a rock & roll song,” singer Richie James Follin told Talkhouse, “and the world needs more of those right now. Not in a holy preaching kind of way, but I think the world will always need more reinterpreted rock & roll music. I wrote this song after listening to “State Trooper” by Bruce Springsteen. I love the howl. It’s a basic blues riff, which is something we don’t really get into, but it felt right so we kept working on it. Lyrically, it’s got a born-to-lose type of theme — being aware it’s not going to work, but going full on into it, because you are hooked. It’s about a feeling, and the process of the journey more than the end result.”

MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND – “QUIET LOUD”

My Brightest Diamond is back with a new non-album single, “Quiet Loud,” which you can read more about here.
