A Certain Ratio prep retrospective box set, cover Talking Heads’ “Houses In Motion”
Legendary Manchester band A Certain Radio and Factory Records alumn are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year with a new box set titled ACR:BOX which will be out May 3 via Mute Records (who are also celebrating their 40th anniversary). It collects all their singles and b-sides, including classics like "Shack Up" and "Knife Slits Water," as well as over 20 unreleased tracks. One of those unearthed songs is a cover of Talking Heads' "Houses in Motion" which was originally supposed to feature vocals by Grace Jones. Unfortunately, she never completed her take, but now the track, which originated in 1980 with producer Martin Hannett at his famed Strawberry Studios, has been finished.
"It was great to find this lost track " says ACR's Jez Kerr. "Even though the original idea was for Grace Jones to sing on it, I think this version captures the essence of ACR at their best – when we are being ACR and sounding like no one else." It does indeed sound like no one else and, even though the origins of this are from nearly 40 years ago, "Houses in Motion" sounds very modern in that funky ACR way. We've got the premiere of its video -- directed by A.J. Gómez at Groovy Chaos -- which feels very Manchester but also seems like it could've been made at any point over the last four decades. Watch it below.
You can pre-order ACR:BOX now. A Certain Ratio will be on a UK tour this spring and are also throwing a two-day ACR festival at Yes, in Manchester, England on May 24 & 25 with live sets from Section 25, Sink Ya Teeth, Gabe Gurnsey, ShadowParty and Eric Random, plus DJ sets from Daniel Miller, The Other Two (aka New Order's Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert), Jon Dasilva, The Orielles and more. All dates are listed below.
Grace Jones, meanwhile, plays NYC's Pride Island this year.
