Aimee Mann played NJ's White Eagle Hall w/ Jonathan Coulton (review, setlist)

Aimee Mann is currently on a small Northeastern tour in support of 2017’s excellent Mental Illness, and she played Jersey City’s White Eagle Hall on Tuesday (6/19). Aimee was accompanied by her stellar backing band, which included collaborator and friend Jonathan Coulton, who also served as the show’s opener. Her setlist was heavy on fan favorites, such as “4th of July,” which kicked off her set, as well as “Wise Up” and “Save Me” from the Magnolia soundtrack. Aimee also included a good chunk of Mental Illness highlights in the mix, including the tender “Rollercoasters,” and “Goose Snow Cone,” which was inspired by her homesickness while on tour.

Aimee and the band were in very good spirits, with her and Jonathan Coulton often playfully poking jabs at each other throughout the night. While the show wasn’t necessarily what one would call flashy, there were some notable moments of showmanship; Aimee performed “You Never Loved Me” with an additional, skillful piano solo from touring keyboardist Jamie Edwards, and both Aimee and Jonathan did a synchronized rockstar jump while playing the final chord of “Long Shot,” which closed the main set.

Aimee and the band returned for a three-song encore, which began with her cover of Harry Nilsson’s “One” and she ended things with her biggest hit, ‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry,” to which a good portion of the crowd began loudly singing along.

Earlier that night, Jonathan Coulton played a highly engaging, humorous opening set, which showcased his trademark brand of quirky folk pop. Song topics ranged from a trip to IKEA, a touchingly funny view of fatherhood on “You Ruined Everything,” and robotic science fiction on “All This Time” (taken from his latest LP Solid State). Before her main set began, Jonathan brought Aimee out to perform duet versions of some of his tracks, including “Skullcrusher Mountain” and “Pictures of Cats.”

Aimee and Jonathan will share the stage again when they play a free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! show with Superchunk at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on Thursday (6/21). You can view fan-shot pictures and videos from Instagram, and view Aimee Mann’s White Eagle Hall setlist, below.
