Amber Coffman announces solo debut, shares lovely first single "All To Myself"

A couple of weeks ago, after the Dirty Projectors released “Keep Your Name,” their first new music in quite some time, there was a lot of speculation about the current makeup of the band. Dave Longstreth was the only member credited on the song, which sampled Amber Coffman‘s vocals from the great love song “Impregnable Question.” The fact that Amber and Dave are a couple, the fact that “Keep Your Name” sounds like a particularly brutal breakup song, and the fact that no one was commenting on the band’s status all added fuel to the speculative fire.

Now the announcement that Amber is releasing a solo album will probably continue to raise questions. She’s announced that City of No Reply will be out via Columbia (no release date yet), and she’s shared a video for the first song called “All to Myself,” which is both a bittersweet song about loneliness and so good that it makes any question of the status of the Dirty Projectors momentarily go out the window. It’s a lilting soul ballad with melody for days, making brilliant use of Amber’s distinctive voice. It’s just a great pop song, one that wormed its way into my head almost immediately.
