American Aquarium announce new LP & tour with Caroline Spence, share new song

Raleigh alt-country band American Aquarium have announced a new album, Chicamacomico, due June 10 via Losing Side Records/Thirty Tigers (pre-order). It was produced by Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, etc), features co-writing contributions from Lori McKenna and Hayes Carll, and it finds frontman frontman BJ Barham reflecting on personal loss, including the recent deaths of his mother and grandmother. He says:

In my sixteen-year career, I have never been prouder of a set of songs, lyrically or stylistically. They have weight, but they aren’t weighed down. It’s a sad record, that makes you feel good. It’s a culmination of nearly two decades of work. Chicamacomico sounds like nothing we’ve ever done yet it sits comfortably amongst the rest of our catalog.

You can hear that coming through in lead single “All I Needed,” which has a mournful undertone but feels breezy, uplifting, and joyful. Listen and watch the video below.

American Aquarium have also announced a lengthy tour, including a run with support from Caroline Spencer that hits NYC’s Brooklyn Made on June 28. Tickets for that show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

Meanwhile, Caroline Spence’s new album True North (which includes a duet with The National’s Matt Berninger) comes out April 29 via Rounder Records, and she also has upcoming headlining shows, including one at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall on April 27 with Brooke Annibale, who just signed to Nettwerk and released her new single “What If You” yesterday. All of Caroline’s dates are listed below too.
