Anais Mitchell’s ‘Hadestown’ opens on Broadway in April
Anaïs Mitchell's folk opera Hadestown has set a date for its Broadway bow: the musical will begin previews at Walter Kerr Theater on March 22 with the official opening date being April 17. The cast for the Broadway production has not been announced but will be directed by Tony nominee Rachel Chavkin. Following an Off-Broadway run in 2016 and a Canadian engagement in 2017, Hadestown is currently running at London's National Theater with Patrick Page, Amber Gray, and Reeve Carney who were all in previous productions of the work.
Hadestown, which Mitchell created originally as a song cycle in 2006 and released as an album in 2010, is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice:
Hadestown follows two intertwining love stories - that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone - as it invites audiences on an epic journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell's beguiling melodies and Chavkin's poetic imagination pit nature against industry, faith against doubt, and love against fear. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.
No word on tickets yet. The Walter Kerr Theater is currently home to "Springsteen on Broadway" which wraps up its year-long run on December 15. You can watch "Hadestown: An Introduction" video, and listen to the official Off-Broadway cast recording, below.
