Fresh off releasing their new album Painting With, Animal Collective brought their tour to NYC for the first of two sold-out BrooklynVegan-presented shows at Irving Plaza last night (2/23). They played almost the entire new album with just a few other songs picked from throughout their discography (including "Daily Routine" and "Bees"). As Deakin is sitting this album and tour out (like he did for Merriweather Post Pavillion), the live setup is a bit more similar to how it was for MPP. This time, Panda Bear, Avey Tare and Geologist are all front and center behind booths, and they have Jeremy Hyman of Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks/Ponytail on drums in the back and a keyboardist off to the side.

Local rappers Ratking opened the show, making for an eclectic but great double bill. They do it again at Irving tonight (2/24), and eventually Animal Collective hook up with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, who isn't on their NYC shows but just added one of her own.
