While fronting grungy trio Slothrust, Leah Wellbaum is also one half of improvisation-based ANMLPLNET with drummer/singer Mickey Vershbow. They met as part of Boston’s music scene and based ANMLPLNET on these four tenets:

1. Always drink absinthe while rehearsing.
2. Write lyrics that are antonymic translations, meaning nouns, adjectives and verbs were replaced with their antonyms.
3. Play songs straight through as one giant piece, no breaks.
4. Accept mostly unusual gigs, like their performances at a Dorchester rave and in a wooden shack on the tiny Star Island off New Hampshire.

Leah and Mickey now live on different coasts but have kept ANMLPNET alive and are set to release their debut album, Fall Asleep, via Ba Da Bing, on April 20. We’ve got the premiere of the album’s opening cut, “I Was Fucked By A Cloud.” Mickey says “This is the first song Leah and I wrote together, if you can call it writing – we really just sent ideas back and forth over email, and then they seemed to settle into their own shape each time we actually played together. In that way this song encapsulates the band itself: a whirling about, indulging in the pleasure of improvised music while also treasuring the art of song form.” Leah adds, “This is the first song we made together. We hope it transports you. We don’t mess with missionary.” Listen to that below.
