Mike Doughty @ Housing Works

Ex-Soul Coughing frontman, and blogger, Mike Doughty played three solo shows in New York City (where he lives) last week. Two were opening for the Polyphonic Spree, and the third is the one from which the photos accompanying this text came from… the monthly benefit concert series at Housing Works Used Book Cafe on Crosby St in SOHO.

The show, which took place on Friday Feb. 18th, 2005, featured opening acts Damon and Naomi, and Emiliana Torrini. All money raised went/goes to causes related to homeless people with aids. I previously posted the photos of Damon & Naomi and Emiliana Torrini from the same show.

I thought Mike was pretty good, partly because it’s great to hear his distinguishable voice that made Soul Coughing so appealing. Even better, he did at least three Soul Coughing covers. While his playing and voice are really good, I couldn’t help but be troubled by his lyrics. This one stuck out the most in my mind after I left:

sunkeneyed girl on delancey st
bulletproof glass in the KFC
so keep the man safe in his paper hat
keep the wrong hands off the biscuit fortune

Did I mention he was just signed to the Dave Matthews-co-owned ATO Records? Expect an appearance by Dave on the forthcoming album.
