The MTVu Awards

Wednesday night (November 2, 2005) I attended the MTVu Award show/taping at Roseland Ballroom in NYC. There was lots of standing around (commercial breaks), lots of young college kids (contest winners?), and a bunch of sweet, but short sets by Matisyahu, Death Cab for Cutie, Little Brother, Saul Williams, and The Go! Team. Artists like The Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, MIA, and even Matisyahu & Saul Williams were up for awards, but unfortunately (for me at least) the awards went to corporatemo bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and mewithoutyou.

Winners were voted by real college kids. Considering the Roseland crowd reaction every time My Chemical Romance was mentioned, I doubt it was even rigged. Death Cab was the only band who performed and won. Motion City Soundtrack, Muse and others were there to accept their awards. Other winners like Green Day and MCR accepted them on video. Lou Reed made a surprise appearance to introduce the show.

Here’s a few general photos from the event. Pictures of the individual performers coming soon.
