WITTR

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to The Week In Metal! We took some time away, but believe me, the hate only grew STRONGER.

Wolves In The Throne Room have emerged from the dark forests of the Pacific Northwest to announce a pair of new releases and drop more details on their previously announced upcoming live LP, Live At Roadburn 08! First up, the Malevolent Grain EP will hit Southern Lord with a 180-gram LP bang, with Conspiracy Records dropping a small pressing of picture discs for the record (a limited batch of CDs will be available on tour). Then on March 31st, the band will drop Black Cascade their new full-length on Southern Lord! Both Malevolent Grain and Black Cascade were recorded by Randall Dunn/Mell Dettmer and are the first to feature new guitarist (former touring member) Will Lindsay of ex-Middian / Age Eternal fame. In addition, WITTR‘s Live at Roadburn 08 will be released with a companion DVD available with the first pressing of 500 copies, with 150 coming in gold vinyl with a silkscreen. Full WITTR tour dates are below, including their date at Scion Rock Fest.

Obscura, an astonishing tech-death band from Deutchland that may or may not be named after the classic Gorguts LP, are streaming a trio of new tracks from massive and recommended upcoming LP Cosmogenesis. Relapse has been kind enough to allow one of those tracks to be made available here for download… check out “Universe Momentum” available above! Cosmogenesis impacts on Feb 17th.

Tombs is pulling double duty on Feb 21st, having scheduled a day show at ABC No Rio with Black Anvil, Woe, and Bastard Sapling and a Winter Hours Record Release show with Defeatist, Engineer, and The Wayward later that night at Death By Audio. Winter Hours is due on Feb 17th via Relapse.

YOB have announced that they will hit the studio in late March with Sanford Parker to record their new album of “5 songs hitting about the 60+ minute mark”. Look for it to surface in late summer 2009. In the meantime, Northwesterners can catch the band at their first reunion gig on 2/28 at The Ash Street Saloon in Portland, Oregon.

Shrinebuilder
Shrinebuilder

Shrinebuilder is in progress! The band blogged through the weekend as they completed recording of their debut album for Neurot.

The previously announced Down/Weedeater/Evil Army tour has been postponed.

With a tagline like “2 stages + 2 days = Total Brutality”, you better f’n deliver. That said, The LA Murder Fest will turn those sunny California skies black on May 9th & 10th when Coffins, Landmine Marathon, Ghoul, Stormcrow, Agenda of Swine, and Lack of Interest hit the stages of The Knitting Factory in Hollywood! Also on the bill are sickening sludgemeisters -16-, who’s new record Bridges To Burn drops on Jan 20th. Check out “So Broken Down” available for download above from the record and to all y’all left coasters, support the band when they hit the road with Giant Squid! Tour schedule is below.
General Surgery will also report for duty at the LA Murderfest, and recently announced the release of their split with Butcher ABC. Look for it on CD via Obliteration Records on January 11 (email [email protected] for a copy) and limited-to-1,000 LP in February via Living Dead Society/Coperaction Records (email [email protected] for a copy). The band will also hit the road with Ghoul following the Murderfest and leading up to Maryland Death Fest (thx SMNNews). Full tour dates are below.

Malkuth, an absolutely killer black metal band featuring members of No Neck Blues Band, have scheduled a show on 1/25 at Public Assembly with Villians, Castevet, and Ipsissimus. Malkuth recently released Mutus Liber out on Hospital Productions and are prepping their second LP for the label.

Converge have scheduled a show at Europa on March 27th! Tickets are on sale. Converge has been added to the Scion Rock Festival in Atlanta… yet one more reason to go! (Thanks Chris!)

Also recently added at Europa, Young Widows will team up with The Austerity Program, My Disco, and Tournament for a show on April 1st! Ticket info is forthcoming, full Young Widows tour dates below. Tournament is lined up to play with Kylesa, Tombs, and Black Anvil at The Charleston.

Satyricon‘s new record The Age of Nero drops on Jan 13th via KOCH Records, and I have to say that I definitely enjoyed it a hell of alot more than Now, Diabolical. Check out the video for “Black Crow On a Tombstone” below and dig on “The Sign Of The Trident”, which the band has made available for download above! Satyricon will hit the road opening for Cradle of Filth at Starland Ballroom on Jan 15th (tix here) and have scheduled an NYC date at Nokia Theater on Feb 27th (tix here).

That Satyricon video, Mastodon, Khanate, Burnt By The Sun, Dillinger Escape Plan, Coliseum, Amenra, Pestilence and more as The Week In Metal continues…

Satyricon – “Black Crow On A Tombstone” Video

Mastodon posted a teaser clip of “Oblivian” from their upcoming Crack The Skye (look for it in Feb). Check it out here.

Hypertension Records is gearing up to drop Amenra‘s Mass IIII on vinyl while the band gets ready to tour the US in celebration of the domestic release of Mass III and Mass IIII on Init Records. The Belgians will be in town TWICE next month… once with A Storm of Light and Zoroaster at Europa on Feb 15th (tix here) and once with Starkweather and Hipster Holocaust on Feb 28th at ABC No Rio. Justin of the mighty Samothrace shared his thoughts on Amenra with Deciblog. Hypertension will also release the vinyl for Withered‘s Folie Circulaire.

Speaking of A Storm of Light, the band is streaming “Sister” from their upcoming split with Nadja at their myspace.

With the final work by the mighty Khanate lingering in the near distance, Hydra Head posted a cryptic description of the upcoming Clean Hands Go Foul. While we wait for that record, take solace in the fact that James Plotkin and Aaron Turner (owner of Hydra Head) recently joined forces with Tim Wyskida (also Khanate) to form JODIS. Having recorded an albums worth of material, Plotkin describes the record as having a “streched out, tempo-less nature of Khanate but of a much more “relaxed”, “ambient” or even “tonal” focus”. The JODIS track “Continents” is available for download; check it out above and check out a Khanate performing “German Dental Work” below.

Meanwhile, Stephen O’Malley announced that KTL, his collabo with Peter Rehberg, have released KTL IV via Editions Mego. Pick it up here.

Khanate – “German Dental Work” LIVE

Battlefields have posted a new track, “Quake and Flood”, from their upcoming Thresholds of Imbalance. Look for the record in March of 2009 on Translation Loss.

MVD have announced the release of a compilation of live performances and vile putridity from the legendary East-Village-punk (before St Marks had a Supercuts and a Pinkberry) GG Allin. Titled The Best of GG Allin & the Murder Junkies (couldn’t that also be the worst?), the DVD hits the racks on Jan 20th and Interpunk is offering it up with a free poster (add shipping & handling) here. If you aren’t familiar with the pervert scumfuc that is GG, this is an easy way to get wise.

Reunited death metallers Pestilence have posted a new song, “Horror Detox”, from their upcoming Resurrection Macabre due on April 14 in the U.S. via Mascot Records. The band will be in the US to play Maryland Death Fest in May.

Burnt By The Sun are hitting the studio this year to record their follow-up to The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good. In the meantime, check out the demo track “F-Unit” streaming at their myspace as well as a short video teaser below!
F-UNIT

Is it news when The Dillinger Escape Plan loses a drummer? Well, they did. But he has been replaced.

The Coliseum tour with Blacklisted which was set to incinerate Europa has been cancelled.

1349 have announced a new set of tour dates including a date at BB King’s on March 2nd and Feb 28th at the Scion Rock Fest. Tickets for BB Kings are available here.

All The Tears

Gods & Queens have added a pair shows including Lit Lounge on Feb 2nd and March 26th at Union Pool with Ghastly City Sleep (mems pg.99). In addition, Ghastly City Sleep have a headlining show of their own lined up for cake shop on Jan 28th. Jamie Getz of Gs & Qs recently weighed in on his favorite hardcore wrestlers to Decibel Magazine.

Charlie Zeleney has left Behold… The Arctopus. Think you have the chops? Hit up the band.

Coalesce are currently mixing their as-yet untitled new album, shooting for a spring 2009 release.

LI’s own Deathcycle have decided to call it quits, and while I don’t believe I ever wrote about the band here, their latest Prelude To Tyranny was fantastic and they will be sorely missed. Make sure and get out to support the band when they play their final show with The Communion, Disnihil, and Inhuman on Feb 28th at Rock Star Bar. Flyer below.
Deathcycle

The Abominable Iron Sloth (mems Will Haven) and blowupnihilist are currently on the road and have scheduled a pair of dates in NYC including one on 1/22 with The Network at The Charleston and a second show at ABC No Rio on 1/24 with Combat, Apocalyptic Visions, and Savage Skull. The Abominable Iron Sloth will work on their follow-up to their self-titled effort for their new label, Black Market Activities, after they return from tour.

Gnaw Their Tongues have posted three new songs from their (his) upcoming pair of releases… Two from All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity (due this spring) and one song from the upcoming Eschatological Scatology, due “sometime in 2009”.

Justin Broadrick announced the digital only releases of Krackhead‘s From Hell and Council Estate Electronics‘s Kitsland on his own Avalanche imprint. From Hell compiles all of the previous Krackhead works by Broadrick recorded between 1997 and 1999. Council Estate Electronics is a new collaboration between Broadrick and Diarmuid Dalton, which focuses on “vintage analog only synth and fx improvisations”. Check out both at the Avalanche website.

Stinking Lizaveta have announced their new album, Sacrifice and Bliss due in the first quarter of 2009. In addition, the band released a two song single to iTunes, Rights For Bicyclists. Sanford Parker served as head knob-twiddler on both ventures.

A new Neurosis record? Kylesa is playing The Charleston and touring with Nachtmystium, Intronaut and The Haunted? Pentagram at Webster Hall? Witch & Earthless are touring together? Hull signed to The End? Catch up on what you missed since the last Week In Metal.

PUNISHMENT DUE:
Slow release week as I can only reccommend the new Satyricon record, The Age of Nero and Kreator‘s Hordes of Chaos. In the meantime, catch up on some great 2008 releases!
