NS=Northside Festival

Northside, Bonnaroo and Download Festivals all close today.

It’s also Day Two of the Big Apple BBQ.

MHOW hosts Sir Richard Bishop & his Freak of Araby Ensemble and Bill Callahan. It’ll be your last chance to catch either perfomer in NYC for a while, and to view the first-ever BrooklynVegan photo show.

BrooklynVegan’s Black Bubblegum-curated Northside metal showcase at Europa is tonight. Zoroaster, who was forced to cancel because of injury, has been replaced by Unearthly Trance. Still time to grab your ticket.

Ponytail‘s Northside show tonight has been moved from The Shank to Studio B. Tickets are still on sale.

We recently posted an MP3 of cellist Erik Friedlander. Tonight he plays an original program entitled “Block Ice & Propane–Taking Trips to America: Stories & Images” at the Stone. The composition “inspired by Erik’s experiences as a child traveling across the United States with his family during the 1960’s and ’70s” will be accompanied by work from filmmaker Bill Morrison and Erik’s family photos.

King’s Crescent at Spike Hill tonight will feature Fiery Furnaces’ Matthew Friedberger and Bob D’Amico.

Laura Gibson plays a Northside show opening for the Dodos at Studio B and headlines at Union Hall tonight. Those will be your only chance to catch the Portland singer — her June 16th Mercury Lounge show with Sharon Van Etten appears to have been canceled.

Black Dice play the Bowery Ballroom with Awesome Color and Soft Circle.

Todd P’s Unamplified Acoustic BBQ @ Fort Tilden Beach is today. A message from Todd on the show, with its full lineup, is posted below…

—-| SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE ACOUSTIC BBQ |—-

We still have one week before Summer is officially here – and I can’t think of a better way to turn the seasons than to spend a lazy afternoon on a beautiful beach far away from it all, listening to some of the best musicians in town bang out some songs on acoustic guitars. That’s what we’ll be doing this Sunday the 14th, all afternoon, on the beach @ Fort Tilden. Acoustic BBQ 2009.

This year’s BBQ is dedicated to the family of Kill Rock Stars artist Jeff Hanson, who passed away in a random accident unexpectedly over this past weekend.

As beautiful and innocuous as the Acoustic BBQ is, it’s easy to forget that there’s a small political statement involved in what we’re doing out there. The Acoustic BBQ was envisioned as an artistic musical event stripped of every element that could be threatening or dangerous. Here’s what I mean: It’s not amplified so it’s so quiet no-one could complain that we’re disturbing their peace. It’s out in the open air so there can be no fingerpointing about “fire safety.” We don’t charge admission & we won’t be selling anything, so there’s no commerce to regulate. It’s in a public place so we’re not trespassing. We vigorously clean up and pack out our trash afterwards, so we’re not littering.

The reason for reciting all of the above is this: the Acoustic BBQ is always an experiment. We’ve reduced a show to its basest parts, just great music and an audience, with no amplification & no money changing hands, in a beautiful open air setting.

Make no mistake though: there’s always a chance that someone in authority will want to “shut it down” regardless, because they can. If that happens, it’s a bummer, but it proves a point: They can shut down anything they want, for any reason, at any time, no matter how harmless it is. We live in a sometimes overregulated society where the answer can be “no” more often than it is “yes,” one where paranoid “liability” obsessions often cancel the freedom to do whatever doesn’t hurt your neighbor, or even the freedom to make positive art happen in your community.

But I’m going to bet nothing like that happens! This event is an unequivically uplifting thing, and anyone who comes out will feel it. Here’s to hoping everything goes great and we get a beautiful day with great free music, in an amazing natural place, and a triumph for what a free country we live in!

PLS KEEP IN MIND: THERE IS NO VEHICLE PARKING AVAILABLE WITHIN FORT TILDEN /OR/ ON BEACH 169TH ST. IT IS *ALL* BY PERMIT ONLY. YOU WILL BE TICKETED AND/OR TOWED IF YOU TRY TO PARK.

OPEN CONTAINER IS NOT “ALLOWED.” USE JUDGEMENT / DISCRETION.

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL NATURAL PLACE, PLS PACK OUT EVERYTHING YOU PACK IN, LEAVE NO TRASH, AND BE RESPECTFUL THAT THIS IS A RARE SERENE PLACE IN NEW YORK CITY. thx!

IN CASE OF RAIN: If this gets rained out we’ll reschedule for the following Sunday, June 21st. Check TODDPNYC.COM @ 11am day of show for an update if you’re afraid it might be rained out. If it’s scattered thunderstorms but mostly sunny, the show will go on. There are structures near the beach that you can hang out in and ride out the storm, if there is a brief one.

ALSO: don’t forget sunscreen
