Cate Le Bon is on tour was in New York for two shows this weekend, following an appearance earlier in the week at Pop Montreal. Friday night (9/21), one night before she hit Union Pool, she played an early show at Mercury Lounge with Boston psych-folk quartet Quilt making for a well-matched double bill.

Those whose only know Le Bon from her mostly gentle debut album and her tour with St. Vincent (where she played alone) does not prepare you for the wonderful, weird Welsh world of seeing her with her ace band who also feature on her fantastic album CYRK (one of 2012’s best) from earlier this year. Songs turn on a dime from delicate finger-plucked Wendy and Bonnie faery folk to ragged Neil Young-style ragers, with moments of organ-fueled Krautrock groove as well. Mind you it all makes sense when watching Le Bon’s do her magical thing.

I missed Quilt but will hopefully catch them while they’re on tour with The Fresh and Onlys which hits Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 8. Tickets for that show are still available. Cate Le Bon’s North American trek rolls on through the South, playing Raleigh, NC tonight (9/25).
