Park Slope Armory still needs volunteers

Park Slope Armory

I’ve tweeted a lot about this over the past two weeks, and mentioned it in some posts, but one easy place to help out for residents of Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and the surrounding areas is at the Park Slope Armory shelter (usually a YMCA) which is located on 15th Street between 7th & 8th (in Brooklyn, you can’t miss it). The place is full of displaced, elderly and disabled residents of the Rockaways.

If in doubt, just stop in and ask them what they need. Bring a coffee and some healthy food for the staff. They might send you right to a quick orientation and put you to work or they might tell you to come back later. They might be accepting donations of certain items. They’ll let you know. BUT, they’ve also gotten much more organized as the days go on, and you can now also sign up in advance for a shift. There’s one sheet for Friday/Saturday and another now for Sunday/Monday (more sheets to follow). UPDATE: here is the sheet for Tuesday/Wednesday (11/13-11/14).

They can use 50 volunteers a day and 40 at night, especially ones that can speak Russian. Volunteers help with general support, food preparation, daily routines, meals, social support and logistics. Wear comfortable clothes. No photos. No kids. Have fun!

Update: Check out a list of items they need at the armory below…
