The Northside Festival
As you probably know from reading this site, Northside Festival is underway in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. If you have a badge, you can use it to get in to any official Northside showcase but admission is based on capacity. If it’s a show you really want to go to, make sure to get there early, especially at smaller venues. Set times for most shows are available on Northside’s Sched.org site. All Northside showcases listed below are indicated as such in the event title.

Solange @ McCarren Park (Northside)
Tonight’s free Northside show in McCarren Park is being headlined by pop explorer Solange. It’s totally RSVPed out but if you’ve got a Northside badge you’re guaranteed entry. Solange is on at 6:45 so you can catch her set and still do whatever night plans you’ve got (hopefully the weather holds out). Also on the bill is Petite Noir, Cable, and My Midnight Heart.

Christopher Owens @ The Slipper Room
The onetime Girls frontman recently released an acoustic version of his solo album, Lysandre, and has been playing similarly unplugged shows, like this — the second of two nights at this tiny LES club.

PAPA @ Glasslands (Northside)
Meanwhile, another former Girls member, Darren Weiss, will be bringing his band PAPA to NYC tonight for a show at Glasslands. Support comes from Future of What and Grand Rapids.

Bang on a Can @ Michael Schimmel Center
One of New York City’s most prominent marathons of avant-garde music, Bang On A Can, comes to Pace University’s Schimmel Center for the 28th year in a row today. Talent includes Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond), Talk Normal, David Lang, Asphalt Orchestra, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Maya Beiser, and many more.

Lambhop @ Warsaw (Northside)
Alt-country vets Lambchop returned in 2012 with a new album and they’ll be back in NYC tonight for a Northside show at Europa with Rebecca Hart. Tickets for tonight’s show are still available.

The Soft Moon, Pop. 1280, Grooms @ 285 Kent (Northside)
Fans of the dark, gothy and dissonant will want to head here for a triple-shot of just that. The Soft Moon rocket on an intense motorik groove, Pop. 1280 should be playing songs from their forthcoming new album, and Grooms do the post-Sonic Youth indie rock better than most. Tickets are still available.

Light Asylum, Young Magic, Psychic Twin, O Paradiso, Adventure @ Cameo (Northside)
Not too far off from the post-industrial EBM genre of goth dance music, Light Asylum (and their magnetic singer, Shannon Fuchess) have long ruled the fringes of the Brooklyn dance world. Tonight they headline a synth-heavy bill at this N. 6th street club which recently refurbished it’s flowy hanging art installation. Tickets are still available.

Why? @ Europa (Northside)
The genre-bending Why?, are heading back to NYC for a Northside show tonight at Europa. Tickets to tonight’s show are still available by will call.

Dead Prez @ Herbert Von King Park (Summerstage)
Dead Prez, who Kanye West recently cited as being the group that most influenced his rap style, will be playing tonight in Bed-Stuy’s Herbert Von King Park. It’s part of this summer’s free Summerstage series. The concert from the socially conscience underground legends will be coupled with a screening of “Soul Food Junkies.”

Nu Sensae at NXNE on Thursday (6/13) (more by David Andrako)
Nu Sensae

Nu Sensae, Destruction Unit, Big Ups, Psychic Blood @ Shea Stadium (Northside)
If you’re into bands that make a hell of a racket, you’d be pretty well off wrapping up your Northside weekend at Shea tonight. Sludgy psych rockers Psychic Blood will kick things off, followed by smirky Brooklyn post-hardcore four piece Big Ups, then the perfectly-named Destruction Unit, who are one of the loudest punk bands around at the moment, and finally, Vancouver’s Sonic Youth-y punks Nu Sensae. Tickets are still available, Northside badges accepted too.

Title Fight, Candy Hearts @ Rocks Off Cruise
If you’d rather hop on a boat than do the whole Northside thing, emotionally-charged punks Title Fight are headlining a Rocks Off cruise with support from sugary pop punks Candy Hearts. The cruise boards at 7 PM on Pier 83 (W 42 St & West Side Highway) and departs at 8 PM.

Black Flag @ Secret Williamsburg venue
“Black Flag” (the one with Greg Ginn and Ron Reyes) just played two Warsaw shows (Friday and Saturday) and now they’re hanging around NYC for one more show at a secret Williamsburg venue tonight. Sold out.

Cast Iron Hike, Primitive Weapons, Lunglust @ Saint Vitus
Brooklyn sludge/hardcore band Primitive Weapons play a hometown show tonight at Saint Vitus with Cast Iron Hike and Lunglust.

Subhumans, Adolescents, Drunken Rampage, The Krays @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Northside)
Legendary UK punks Subhumans are at MHOW tonight for their second of two NYC shows. This one’s also part of the Northside festival and is doubly good because another legendary band, Adolescents, is on the bill too.

Limp Wrist, Hoax, Nomad & more @ Le Poisson Rouge
Queercore vets Limp Wrist play their second of two NYC shows tonight at Le Poisson Rouge. Support is solid too, coming from Hoax, Nomad, Give, and S.H.I.T.

Born Ruffians, The Spinto Band, Turf War @ Brooklyn Bowl (Northside)
Toronto indie stalwarts Born Ruffians, whose new album came out in April, headline this solid pop bill presented by the good folks at Pop Montreal that also features underrated Delaware combo The Spinto Band and Augusta, GA’s scrappy Turf War. Tickets are still available.

Sinkane @ Maxwell’s
After playing a few Northside shows, Sinkane is playing a show at Maxwell’s tonight.

Jim Coleman, Half Waif, The Bones of J.R. Jones @ Pete’s Candy Store (Northside)
Pete’s Candy Store will be hosting their 5th 2013 Northside show with three local acts performing. They are all on the chiller side, so if your body is aching today from three nights of Northside, this might be a nice change of pace for you. It’s especially worth showing up for synth pop trio Half Waif.

Ratking, Hot Sugar & more @ Knitting Factory (Northside)
Ratking are also playing a Northside show tonight at Knitting Factory. Hot Sugar and Normally Important are on the bill too. This show should be a nice warm up (pun intended) for Ratking’s next NYC date.

Color War and Jason Bartell of Fang Island @ Ace Hotel
Brooklyn’s Color War are doing a Sunday residency at Ace Hotel with a different special guest each week. Today’s guest is Jason Bartell of Fang Island.

Clearwater Music Festival
If you are looking to get out of the city, or you have a hippy father, then perhaps the Clearwater Festival in Croton-on-Hudson is your cup of tea for today. The show benefits the preservation of the Hudson River and features performances from Pete Seeger & Lorrre Wyatt, Son Volt, Hot Tuna and Kris Kristofferson today.
