Eyehategod @ Housecore Horror Fest (more by Trent Maxwell)

Cat Power @ Bonnaroo 2013 (more by Dana [distortion] Yavin)
Cat Power

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Xeno & Oaklander, Eraas, Azar Swan, Soviet Soviet @ 285 Kent Avenue
This is the first of two NYC shows for Brooklyn post-punks Eraas and Italian post-punks Soviet Soviet this week. The whole lineup tonight is great though, also including Brooklyn minimal synth mainstays Xeno & Oaklander, who have just teamed up with Ghostly International for their new single “Par Avion” (streaming below), and local goth-pop duo Azar Swan.

Cat Power, Nico Turner @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple (2 shows)
No offense to the recent Cat Power stuff, all of which has been excellent, but sometimes we miss the intimacy of the early slowcore days, and tonight we’ll get a chance to revisit that kind of intimacy when Chan Marshall plays two solo shows at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple (6 PM and 10:30 PM). The early show is sold out but you can still get tickets to the late one.

Smith Westerns @ Baby’s All Right
Having just headlined Webster Hall, Smith Westerns sneak in a tiny show at new Williamsburg club Baby’s All Right at the end of their tour. It’s a midnight show and tickets are still available.

Wooden Indian Burial Ground, Chat Logs, Beech Creeps, IYEZ @ Death By Audio
Portland’s Wooden Indian Burial make psychedelic garage rock, with a healthy dose of b-movie sci-fi — there could be theremins in effect tonight. Check out their self-titled LP from 2012 below.

Man Tear, Marlene, Vaz, Kissey, Axel Boman @ Baby’s All Right
You may already know that Sweden makes music (ABBA, The Cardigans, The Hives, etc) but let’s be reminded tonight with a party called “Sweden Makes Music” featuring house producer Axel Boman, his DFA-signed duo Man Tear and some commercial-minded pop groups.

Kim Gordon, Jutta Koether, I.U.D. @ Issue Project Room
The second of the two-night IPR benefit honoring Kim Gordon features Kim performing two sets, each with different collaborators. One is with her Her Noise collaborator Jutta Kother, and the other is a trio set with I.U.D. (aka Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance and Sadie Laska of Growing).

Wooden Shjips, Cave Woodsman @ Knitting Factory
Long-running San Francisco psych band Wooden Shjips just released their new album,Back to Land, this week and play a their second NYC show this week with likeminded tourmakes Cave.

Active Child, JMSN @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The synthy Active Child is on the road supporting his new Ropor EP, and that tour brings him to NYC for two shows this week withJMSN, who did a lot of vocals on Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city. This is night 2.

Violent Femmes @ Roseland Ballroom
What can you say about Violent Femmes’ 1983 debut album? “Kiss Off,” “Add it Up” and “Gone Daddy Gone” — and basically every song on it — are bonafide teen-angst classics. You may not listen to it so much anymore but go to the show and just try not to sing along.

Eyehategod, Mutilation Rites, The Communion @ Saint Vitus
Sludge metal greats Eyehategod have had tough year with the passing of original drummer Joey LaCaze, and now after a brieft stint with Dale Crover of Melvins filling in, they’ve announced that Joey’s permanent replacement is Aaron Hill (Missing Monuments, Mountain of Wizard). Tonight they return to NYC for their first of two shows here this week. If you’re going tonight, Mutilation Rites rip too, so show up early.

Soft Black, Bully, Beat Radio, Juan Wauters @ Shea Stadium
Synthpop band Soft Black headline tonight but for those going to this show, do get there early for The Beets’ Juan Wauters who’ll have a new solo album out on Captured Tracks in the new year.

Chromeo @ Webster Hall
An amalgam of early-’80s electro-R&B (Cameo, Rockwell, various Jacksons), Chromeo are not afraid to embrace the cheese. And if you aren’t either, it’s a fun time. Expect songs from their forthcoming album White Women, which features guest appearances from Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Toro Y Moi, and Solange.

Chromeo (DJ Set), Brenmar @ Slake
If you wanna keep the party going, Chrome will be DJing their own afterparty at Westside club Slake.

Eli Paperboy Reed @ Union Pool
With a new album out soon, Eli Paperboy Reed will be premiering a lot of fresh material at two intimate shows at Union Pool, tonight being the first.

Black Dice, Ratking, DJ Pizza Party @ 285 Kent
This multi-genre bill brings the noise of Black Dice together with the indie rap of Ratking, for what should make for a pretty unique night. And maybe there will even be some collaborations, because as weird as this matchup is, Ratking and Eric Copeland of Black Dice have an upcoming collaborative EP CONS EP VOL. 1. coming out, which you can stream a track from below.

John Fogerty @ Beacon Theatre
This is the third night at Beacon for John Fogerty and it’s a little different than the previous two — he’ll be performing Credence Clearwater Revival’s Cosmo’s Factory and Bayou Country in full. Tickets are still available.

Alison Moyet @ Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center
The powerhouse voice behind Yaz, Alison Moyet has returned to her electropop roots with her new album, The Minutes, but you can expect “Situation” and “Don’t Go” too. Former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke will DJ beforehand.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Talib Kweli, Big K.R.I.T. @ Theater at MSG
We’re not super into the headliner, but the openers on this tour, which hits the Theatre at MSG for three consecutive nights this week, are always worth seeing. Talib really needs no introduction, having been a mainstay in NYC rap since the ’90s, and Big K.R.I.T. is one of the finest newer rappers keeping the dirty south alive and dirty. This is night 2.

Catz ‘N Dogz, Orchard Lounge, Tone of Arc, Connie @ Output
It’s Output’s weekly INPUT party tonight, and these four DJs/beatmakers should have you dancing til the early morn’.

Gary Clark Jr., Alice Smith @ Apollo Theater
Gary Clark Jr. plays the kind of blues guitar that even your dad can get down with, and he’ll be bringing his licks to NYC for two shows this week (both sold out). Tonight he’s at the legendary Apollo and on Saturday, he’ll be at the big Terminal 5.

Weekend Nachos @ ABC No Rio & No Fun Club
Chicago’s Weekend Nachos whip up a storm of hardcore fury, adding bits of crust, powerviolence, and sludge to the mix, and making for some surprisingly accessible stuff. Today they play two NYC-area shows, a matinee at ABC No Rio in the LES and a night show at No Fun Club in Island Park.
