London-via-Japan quartet Bo Ningen were here over the weekend, playing Knitting Factory on Friday (4/25) and a free Rough Trade in-store Sunday afternoon (4/27). I caught the Rough Trade show and if I had to describe them in five words it would be “what the hell was that?” In a good way. Or, what if a Chinese wuxia film was a Japanese doom/shoegaze/prog/psych/punk band? Insane playing, jumps from the drumkit, flying hair that at times seemed to be a special effect — it was definitely a good alternative to coffee on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Bo Ningen have since added another NYC show to their tour before they head to this weekend’s Austin Psych Fest. They’ll play Studio @ Webster Hall on Friday (5/2) with Yvette, which should make for an exciting double bill. Tickets for that show are on sale.
