Ottawa’s Zex recently released a 7″ on Electric Assault Records that’s a blast if you’re into first/second-wave punk, bearing a strong resemblance to groups like Shaking Street. The title track gets its hooks into you via Heartbreaker riffs, along with just enough bubblegum-ness to ensure its place in a summer playlist. You wouldn’t figure Jo Capitalicide of speed metallers/nudie cover art connoisseurs Iron Dogs was on guitar, but, hey, there he is. You can check out “Savage City” below.

So, if you were placing Zex on a punk show, what would you tap for the rest of the bill? Raging d-beat, of course. Zex will be playing NYC at the Acheron on August 16 with Gainesville, Florida’s Process and Vermin, along with Boston’s Symptom and New York’s Heathen. Tickets are available now. Vermin and Symptom are your d-beaters, while Process and Heathen are raw, noisy punk. Symptom released an absolutely bruising self-titled EP this year which is also worth your time.
