Early-mid ’00s post-hardcore band The Blood Brothers are reunited this year, and having already played FYF Fest and a hometown Seattle show, they finally made their way to NYC over the weekend where they first played Central Park’s Modern Sky Fest and then headlined a BrooklynVegan-presented show at Warsaw last night (10/5). The show was opened by Violent Bullshit, the current band of Orchid’s Jayson Green, who mentioned on stage that The Blood Brothers’ first tour was opening for his old band (“and look at me now”).

The show sold out way in advance and was packed for The Blood Brothers. The entire front half of Warsaw was a moving organism for a lot of the show and was full of huge fans. Almost all the people you could see were yelling along, raising fists in unison and generally having a killer time. Lots of moshing, stage diving and crowd surfing, especially towards the end, and including co-frontman Johnny Whitney who jumped into the crowd while continuing to sing multiple times. The band sounded awesome and were way into the show themselves. Granted, they haven’t been away as long as some of the other bands reuniting recently, but still it was hard to believe this was their fourth show together since 2007. A few of the people we talked to after the show even agreed they were better now than the first time around.

Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes was there, which may seem a little surprising considering his recent output but not when you consider his old band Test Icicles (who Oh My Rockness said “sound like The Blood Brothers meets Death From Above 1979” in 2006). Also in attendance was Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, who played with Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of The Blood Brothers in Head Wound City, their short-lived side project with the Locust’s Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian who just played their second show ever (and first in nine years) in LA last month (two new songs included). Maybe Head Wound City will play NYC too? Let’s hope.

The Blood Brothers’ only two remaining shows that are currently announced are part of Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest in November (one is an aftershow). More pictures from the Warsaw show, videos of both bands, and The Blood Brothers’ 22-song setlist, below…
