What's going on Tuesday? (CMJ, Thurston Moore, Inter Arma, Horrors, James, Secret Chiefs 3, DIIV, Wreckless Eric & more)

Thurston Moore w/ Sonic Youth in 2011 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
SY

Because of CMJ, we’re doing ‘What’s Going On’ slightly different this week. Each day there’s a handful of day shows which are listed first, followed by the night shows. With so many events happening each day, we’ve limited this to our top picks, but there’s a list of other good ones below the fold. And for even more of tonight’s shows, you can browse our full NYC show calendar.

DAY SHOWS

Peter Matthew Bauer, Bo Ningen, Happyness, Money, Spires, Slothrust, Strange Names @ Baby’s All Right
The good folks at Tell All Your Friends PR are putting on this day party featuring former Walkmen bassist Peter Matthew Bauer, plus Japanese prog metalists Bo Ningen, UK indie rock trio Happyness and more. A varied and very solid day party option.

CYMBALS, Curtin, J Fernandez,September Girls, Casual Sex, Boyd Shropshire, Flowers, Beach Day @ Cake Shop
Cake Shop is always a safe CMJ bet and today’s free day party was booked by the venue itself, featuring a bunch of acts from across the pond, including English bands CYMBALSand Flowers, Ireland’s September Girls and Scottish band Casual Sex. Plus: Kurt Vile cohort Boyd Shropshire, LA’s J Fernandez and Florida pop band Beach Day.

NIGHT SHOWS

Secret Chiefs 3 @ Le Poisson Rouge
Mr. Bungle member Trey Spruance leads the instrumental experimental rock collective Secret Chiefs 3, whose tour hits NYC for its first of two shows here this week (during but not part of CMJ).

The Mystery Lights, Calvin Love, Homeshake, Honey/Free, OJ Pimpson @ Baby’s All Right
This is a free late night show from the folks at M for Montreal featuring a mix of Canadian (Calvin Love, Homeshake, OJ Pimpson) and U.S. acts. Starts at midnight and if you make it to the end (on this the first night of CMJ) we salute you.

DIIV, Splashh, PAWS, Nuns, Beach Day @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
DIIV are busy finishing up their new album but will play this show at North Brooklyn’s one-stop shop for locally-made gifts, mini-golf, micro-brews. tasty food and live music. The other bands on the bill — including UK indie rockers PAWS and Splash — are good too. While most shows at BKNB are free, this one is $20, or you can get in with your CMJ badge.

Wreckless Eric, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding @ Death By Audio
Punk/new wave vet Wreckless Eric is maybe best known for his 1977 hit “Whole Wide World,” but he’s more than that and continues to be very active. Tonight’s an intimate show at the soon-closing Death by Audio and with quality support. FYI: Eric’s on at 9 PM and Scott & Charlene’s Wedding at 10 PM.

Tom Vek, Olga Bell @ Mercury Lounge
Tom Vek’s style — jittery, syncopated, danceable postpunk — is as distinctive as his voice, and he hasn’t futzed with it too much over his 10-year career. Having released his third album, Luck, earlier this year he’s over for a few US shows this week.

Alkaline Trio, Jenny Owen Youngs @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Grim but melodic punks Alkaline Trio have eight records ranging from pretty good to pretty great, and they’ll be playing two in full at each night of this 4-night run at MHOW (it won’t be announced which albums are which night). This is night 1, though all four shows fall during CMJ, they’re not part of the fest.

Roomrunner, Celestial Shore, Heliotropes, Washer @ Palisades
Baltimore grunge lovers Roomrunner have a new EP called Separate out this week just in time for CMJ. This is one of a couple shows they’ve got scheduled, and the whole lineup is solid.

John Nolan, ’68, Chris Farren, Xerxes, The Felix Culpa, Aviator, Rescuer, In Between, Foreign Tongues, Maps for Travelers @ Paper Box (FREE No Sleep showcase, BV co-presents)
The trusty No Sleep Records is throwing its showcase which is FREE (no badges required) which starts early at 6 PM and goes til after midnight. There’s a ton of cool stuff, including a solo set from Taking Back Sunday’s John Nolan, a few killer post-hardcore bands (Xerxes, Aviator, Rescuer, Maps For Travelers), the reunited Felix Culpa, the punky Run Forever and more. BrooklynVegan proudly co-presents this one.

Honey Wild, Fractures, Little May, Monica Heldal, Happyness, Son Little, Elle King, Horse Thief @ Rockwood Music Hall
WFUV and Communion Records helped put this show together, featuring Oklahoma’s anthemic Horse Thief (shades of Fleet Foxes), the US live debut from Australia’s Little May, and the throwback indie rock sounds of Happyness.

The Crookes, Money, Spring King, Longfellow @ Rough Trade
Clothing brand Ben Sherman is presenting this show so it may be no surprise all the bands are from the UK. We’re especially looking forward to Spring King whose anthemic swagger falls somewhere between Wavves and Palma Violets. Also: this show is free.

The Thurston Moore Band, PCPC (mems Parquet Courts + PC Worship) @ Saint Vitus
Thurston Moore’s new band includes his former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine bassist Deb Googe, and guitarist James Sedwards, and unlike Thurston’s last acoustic-y album, this band’s more similar to what Thurston was writing in latter-day Sonic Youth. Their tourmates, PCPC, are the result of Parquet Courts and PC Worship members coming together for a collaborative project, so that should be interesting as well. This non-CMJ show is their first of two sold-out NYC shows, the next one being Rough Trade on Sunday.

Ex-Breathers, Glish, Vetter Kids, The Hawks of Holy Rosary @ Shea Stadium
This is the Texas Is Funny showcase with a good lineup of that label’s bands all around, most notably Florida hardcore rippers Ex-Breathers.

Dream Police, Natural Velvet, Psychic Blood, Survival @ Silent Barn
Most interestingly, this is one of a few CMJ shows for Dream Police, the other project of The Men’s Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi, who make more avant-garde and effect-laden music than The Men’s recent output. Psychic Blood are good too.

The Horrors, Moon Duo (members of Wooden Shjips) @ Stage 48
Psych out tonight with British post-punks The Horrors and the groovy drone of Moon Duo. For those who like to show-hop at CMJ, Stage 48 is out of the way, but it’s The Horrors’ only East Coast show this tour.

Inter Arma, King Parrot, So Hideous, Lazer/Wulf, The Moon Tooth @ The Acheron
This is the Metal Injection/MetalSucks showcase and it’s headlined by the awesome psychedelic metallers Inter Arma who just put out a one-song 40-minute EP. Locals So Hideous are well-matched and the proggy Lazer/Wulf are cool too.

Weyes Blood, Guy Blakeslee, Heat, The #1s, J Fernandez, Lydia Ainsworth @ Union Pool
Tonight, Union Pool hosts the YVYNYL CMJ showcase which has a great and diverse lineup. There’s powerhouse vocalist Weyes Blood, The Entrance Band’s Guy Blakeslee, Montreal’s fuzzed-out Heat, Ireland’s power pop/garage rockers The #1s, the guitar pop of J Fernandez, and the new age-y Lydia Ainsworth.

James @ Webster Hall
Long-running Manchester band James formed in 1982 and were originally signed to Factory Records (home of Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays). They were championed early by The Smiths but seemed saddled with underground success until “Sit Down” and then “Laid” which took the band into international stardom in the early ’90s. The band have remained active since, and released La Petite Mort, their 13th album, earlier this year which finds them in much the same big anthemic, danceable style they’ve always worked in.

The Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon Theatre
The current lineup of The Allman Brothers Band has had a very long and impressive run, but sadly the band has chosen to retire at the end of this month. They’ll go out with a bang though, with six shows in eight nights at the Beacon, this being the first.

The Kills, Alec Soth, Joe Purdy, Billy Bragg @ Terminal 5
Though The Kills’ intimate CMJ show at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday is probably the place to be if you’re a Kills fan, you can catch them playing a “short set” at this one, which is The Open Road Aperture Foundation Benefit Party, a tribute to photographer/filmmaker Robert Frank.

PINS, September Girls, Mannequin Pussy, Vasudeva, Amanda X @ Cameo Gallery
Oh My Rockness curated this night of four excellent female-fronted bands — including Manchester UK’s PINS, Philadelphia’s Amanda X — plus the dudes that are Jersey’s Vasudeva.
