Citizen streaming new album, 'Everybody Is Going to Heaven'

by Andrew Sacher

Citizen

Run for Cover Records is really having an incredible year. Between Turnover, Adventures and Cloakroom, RFC is already home to plenty of the year’s best indie rock albums, and now another can be added to that list: Citizen. We already saw the band’s melodic grunge-punk beginnings taking a turn for the more atmospheric on last year’s “Silo” single, but guitarist Nick Hamm told Billboard the new album is “completely dismissive of the trajectory of our peers and of the trajectory we were expected to take.”

That’s pretty true. If they went the trajectory of their peers, they’d probably make a shoegaze album. And I’m not sure what direction anyone else expected them to take, but I didn’t think they’d get this heavy. The new album, called Everybody Is Going to Heaven, sounds like Daisy-era Brand New, In Utero-era Nirvana, and The Jesus Lizard. (In fact, the intro to “Stain” is almost identical to The Jesus Lizard’s “Then Comes Dudley.”) It was produced once again by Will Yip, who did their debut and tons of other great punk bands, and he pretty much gives the record his best Steve Albini impression, with huge snare drums and bare-sounding guitars and vocals. Throw in the fact that singer Mat Kerekes’ scream has never sounding so throat-shredding, and this album is pretty much a must-listen for fans of heavy rock.

The album comes out June 23 via Run for Cover, and digital pre-orders are currently up for $5.

The band’s only upcoming tour dates are Warped Tour with H2O, PUP, The Dirty Nil and a lot of bands you probably want to avoid seeing. That hits the NYC-area on 7/11 at Jones Beach (tickets). H2O aren’t on that stop, but they did just announce two NYC shows with Rancid.
