At the end of the first night of this year’s Afropunk Festival, on Saturday, she was wearing very little: an under-bust corset, sheer tights and white body paint in stripes and patterns. Which is to say that she was topless, though by that point she’d been through a succession of wraps, gowns, science-fiction headdresses and a skull mask. She sat down on a stage riser, removed one of her high heels and pretended to throw it at the audience, but held on. “That was childish,” she admitted, and cackled.

Then she picked up a hula hoop, stepped into it, and put it to use. For all of her final song, “Slave to the Rhythm,” she kept the hoop going: through its symphonic swells and its negative spaces, through her deep, severe long-tones and incidental muttering, through introductions of band members and a reference to her forthcoming autobiography. – [NY Times]

Afropunk Fest happened over the weekend at Brooklyn’s Commodore Berry Park and drew an estimated 30,000 people each day. Friday night (8/21) was the annual Fancy Dress Ball featuring sets from the flamboyant (and barely clothed) Grace Jones, as well as Cakes Da Killa who wasn’t too far behind Ms. Jones in the theatricality department. Pictures from the evening are in this post.

You can catch Cakes Da Killa at NJ’s Stone Pony on September 4 with Big Eyes and headliner Against Me!, which is a BrooklynVegan-presented Red Bull Sound Select show. Like most RBSS shows, it’s $3 with RSVP or $10 without. Even if you RSVP, entry is on a first come, first served basis. So make sure you get there early.
