Tanya Tagaq @ SXSW 2015
Tanya Tagaq

She’s an Inuit throat singer from the Arctic regions of northern Canada. She makes sounds that are absolutely unimaginable. You cannot believe that a human voice without electronic effects is making the sounds that she’s making. She gives a performance that is as powerful as any intense punk performance I’ve ever seen. It’s 25 minutes of just nonstop sounds from the human body that is erotic at times, tearful at times. She just takes you through these various emotions … backed by just a violin and a drummer. – [Bob Boilen, NPR]

Polaris Prize-winning Canadian Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq is touring this fall, including a couple NYC dates. She’ll perform at new Williamsburg venue National Sawdust on October 2 (tickets). Before that she’s part of an all-day Ted Talks event at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 26. Tickets and more info here. Other dates include her performing a live score to famous (and controversial) documentary Nanook of the North at the Montréal en Lumière Festival in February. All dates are listed, along with a short performance video of Tagaq in action, below.

Tanya Tagaq performed at SXSW back in March and we caught her at the globalFEST showcase. You can check out a (very) belated set of pics in this post which continue below….
