What's going on Tuesday? (L7, John McCauley, Thee Oh Sees, Chelsea Wolfe, Kiesza, Center Negative & more)

L7
Meek Mill SXSW 2012

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

L7, Les Sans Culottes @ Irving Plaza
L7 are finally back since breaking up in the early 2000s, and going by their other recent reunion shows they’re still total rock stars. This is their first of two nights in NYC.

Thee Oh Sees, Zs, Ice Balloons @ Bowery Ballroom
Coming off their strongest album in a while, Mutilator Defeated at Last, Thee Oh Sees bring their new(ish) two drummer lineup to NYC for the first of three shows. Tonight is sold out.

John McCauley (Deer Tick), Frances Quinlan (Hop Along) @ City Winery
Two singers of two very good bands come together for two nights at City Winery, this being the second. There’s John McCauley of bar rockers Deer Tick and Frances Quinlan of heart-on-sleeve Saddle Creek indie rockers Hop Along.

Chelsea Wolfe, Wovenhand @ Saint Vitus
Chelsea Wolfe’s new album Abyss it’s out now and it’s her heaviest yet. Her tour with the great Wovenhand hits NYC for two shows, this being the first. It’s sold out.

Joan Shelley @ Joe’s Pub
Joan Shelley recalls the folk singers of late ’60s and early ’70s (think Joni Mitchell) and on her brand new album Over and Even she does that sound a lot of justice.

American Authors, Kiesza, Nick Jonas, Shawn Mendes, Timeflies @ Best Buy Theater
The artist we’re most excited about on this bill is house-inspired pop singer Kiesza. But it’s at least semi-interesting that she’s playing with Nick Jonas, who’s been leaving the boy band world to collaborate with Purity Ring and Tinashe.

Millencolin, Make Do And Mend @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Swedish skate punks Millencolin recently put out True Brew (on Epitaph), their first album in seven years, and it has them picking up right where they left off. Opening is Make Do and Mend, a newer band who owe a lot to ’90s melodic hardcore.

Travi$ Scott @ Gramercy Theatre
Longtime Kanye collaborator Travi$ Scott finally put out his own debut album this year, and he’s celebrating with three sold-out release shows at Gramercy Theatre. This is the second, and a special guest is promised.

MPHO, elle le fantôme, Long Nails, WALL @ Alphaville
It’s a night of DIY synthpop, highlighted by charmingly gloomy elle le fantôme.

Hamish Kilgour, Center Negative, Maximum Ernst @ Trans-Pecos
If you like classic Flying Nun style indie pop/rock, tonight has The Clean’s Hamish Kilgour headlining, as well as young New Zealander artist Center Negative who clearly has heard a few Tall Dwarves albums. Have a listen to Center Negative’s new album, Emotion is Cringey, below.

Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick. (Aziz Ansari  and Louis CK have both stopped by in recent weeks.) 8 PM.
