Williamsburg venue Baby’s All Right (where BrooklynVegan just hosted three CMJ shows) is now in its second year and it celebrated its terrible twos with a party of Terrible Records artists last night (10/20). Okay Kaya opened, but I didn’t get there until a few songs into Moses Sumney‘s set. It was definitely a party crowd, but Moses’ quiet songs still went over really well and the place was roaring and cheering after every song. Moses’ guitar songs are nice, but his biggest appeal is the parts where he loops himself beatboxing and then layers his vocoder/auto-tune vocals over it in sort of a James Blake way. It was cool stuff.

Then it was Empress Of (aka Lorely Rodriguez with a two-piece backing band) whose debut album Me is one of my favorites of this year and who was the main draw for me on the show. They played most of the new album (and an old one that Lorely said they never used to play live) and they really sounded great. The beats were heavier/dancier live, and i think just about everyone was into that. Most people around where I was standing were dancing for every song, and a good amount of people were singing along too. Just about every song was met by really appreciative shouts from the crowd. People really love her.

Most people had filtered out (or at least gone to the front room) by the time special guest Kirin J Callinan went on, but he wasn’t exactly playing a set so much as being a party DJ and his usual quirky/hilarious self. He had the remaining crowd sing “Happy Birthday” to Baby’s over a dance beat, and then celebrated the venue’s hometown with a dance remix of Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” (And later “Mambo #5” and a house version of the Game of Thrones theme.) Kirin himself went into the crowd a few times to dance with people and kept saying, “I don’t know why you’re all looking at me, it’s a birthday party!”

Baby’s continues to celebrate its second birthday with another party on Saturday (10/24) with Neon Indian, Porches and a special guest. Tickets are still available.
