The annual Winter Jazzfest returns to various NYC venues in 2016 from January 13-17. Since we last spoke, the lineup added a bunch of other artists, including Naytronix, Red Baraat, Sun Ra Arkestra, SK Kakraba (Awesome Tapes from Africa), No BS!, Nublu Orchestra, Forro in the Dark plays Zorn, Pedrito Martinez and many more.

They join previously announced names Bill Laswell, Brandon Seabrook Powerplant, Nels Cline, Colin Stetson, Dawn of Midi, Jose James, Kaki King, Kamasi Washington, Matana Roberts, Sarah Neufeld, The Ex and more.

More details have already been released about the special celebration of ECM Records:. Here’s the label’s own announcement:

ECM Records has documented progressive jazz like no other independent label, producing albums that have helped “change the course of recorded art,” according to the Wall Street Journal. On January 15-16 at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium, Winter Jazzfest 2016 will present two special all-ECM evenings featuring 13 acts. This is an unprecedented label showcase at Winter Jazzfest, which over the past decade has helped epitomize New York City as the place to experience the leading edge of jazz, for musicians, critics and fans alike.

Performing material from their latest ECM releases in this showcase will be the Vijay Iyer Trio, Mark Turner Quartet, pianist David Virelles’ ensemble Mbókò, pianist Craig Taborn solo and guitarist David Torn solo. The evenings will also feature artists unveiling material from new and imminent albums on the label, including the trio of Ches Smith, Craig Taborn & Mat Maneri, Avishai Cohen Quartet, Michael Formanek’s Ensemble Kolossus and Ralph Alessi Quartet. There will be groups on the bill that have upcoming ECM recording sessions, too, such as the new Chris Potter Quartet, Theo Bleckmann’s Elegy and the duo of Ethan Iverson & Mark Turner; and saxophonist Tim Berne will debut a new quintet, Sideshow. See below for the complete lineup.

Founded in Munich by lauded producer Manfred Eicher, ECM has always had a keen connection to the vital currents of jazz emanating from this side of the Atlantic. With the label’s characteristically organic interactions and conceptual resonance to the fore, these two unmissable nights of performance at Winter Jazzfest will underscore the ever-robust, trans-Atlantic jazz vision of ECM. “For me, the source of jazz has always ultimately been America – New York City, especially,” says Eicher. “Now there’s a new generation of musicians in New York that is particularly interesting to me, so I’m happy that I’ll be here again to see an exciting program featuring these artists – one that helps mark ECM’s long connection to America and New York.”

More details on the ECM lineups can be viewed below.

The full festival schedule is still TBA, but tickets for the whole festival and select individual shows are available.
