New York has always kind of been our home, even though we’re from Massachusetts. In the early days it was really all about CBGB’s and the other early clubs in New York; we played Boston but New York is what we always gravitated towards. J actually transferred to Hunter College from UMass to be closer to that music scene in the late ’80s and also so he could be closer to Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth. I don’t know why, but we always thought New York was the coolest place, especially for punk rock. Plus, I actually grew up right outside of New York in the Stanford area. – [Murph in The Aquarian]

Last night (12/3), Dinosaur Jr. began their seven-show run at Bowery Ballroom celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album. The night started with Henry Rollins introducing the band from the balcony, and J, Lou and Murph then cranked out 1985’s Dinosaur (maybe the least typically Dinosaur Jr-y of any of their records) in full. There there was a break, which took longer than expected due to Lou having cable problems, and the real fun began with a second set which featured favorites from throughout their career…and a parade of special guests, three of whom shared the stage together at Webster Hall at Wednesday’s Ground Control Touring 15th Anniversary party.

Steve Gunn came out to sing and play on “Yeah We Know” from Bug; then Eleanor Friedberger was brought out to sing “Get Me” from Where Ya Been (she playfully ripped up the lyric sheet, crumpled it into a ball and threw it into the audience and left the stage before the song was over); Kurt Vile sang and played guitar on “Crumble” (from Beyond). We’d see Kurt again before the night was over.

Finally, Kim Gordon came out for “Don’t,” much like she’d done three years ago at Terminal 5. Very much in rock star / karaoke mode, Kim mopped up the place, playing to the audience and offering the mic to folks in the front row to sing along. Then another break and the band came out with Kurt Vile again, as well as John Moloney on a second drum kit, for a killer cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer.” Setlist is below.

They do it again tonight (12/4) which is sold out. Who do you think might be tonight’s special guests? More pics from Thursday’s show below…
