The Libertines You're My Waterloo

With piano, strings and a little oboe, The Libertines‘ lovely ballad “You’re My Waterloo,” from this year’s Anthems for Doomed Youth, evokes nostalgic romance without even focusing on the lyrics. With them, though, including mentions of Judy Garland, British comedian Tony Hancock and other things-gone-by, not to mention Pete Doherty’s still facile way with words, the mise-en-scène is complete.

It’s fitting, then, that they’ve made such a wonderful video for the song, where a couple have one of those stay-out-till-dawn nights (a-la Before Sunrise), where even the arguments are magical and nothing will ever be as perfect again. The black-and-white video, which stars Freddie Highmore (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory), was co-directed by The Libertines’ Carl Barat and Roger Sargent (who directed the new Suede movie). Watch it below.
