Very sad news: Pop and soul icon Aretha Franklin died Thursday morning at her home in Detroit after being very ill. The official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer. She was 76. "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family" said Franklin's family in a statement to the Associated Press.

Rest in peace, Aretha. Your music and voice live on.

An Aretha Franklin tribute, which is being presented by Clive Davis, is being planned for November at Madison Square Garden.
