Ashrae Fax reissued their 2003 LP 'Static Crash' via Mexican Summer, playing shows (dates, win tix to Glasslands & an LP)

Ashrae Fax

Ashrae Fax were a shortlived duo from Greensboro, NC whose 2003 full-length, Static Crash, only came out on CD-R to almost zero fanfare at the time. The called it quits shortly thereafter. The record — dark, ethereal and danceable — had a life of it’s own, getting a tiny vinyl pressing a couple years ago. The good ears at Mexican Summer gave it a proper reissue over the summer. It’s a real lost classic, sounding like a forgotten 1985 4AD collaboration between The Cocteau Twins, Colourbox and Dif Juz discovered in Ivo Watts-Russell’s attic. (Their song “Pointbreak” is a stunner.) You can stream a couple songs below and listen to the whole thing on Rdio or Spotify.

Band members Alex Chesney and Renée Mendoza Haran (who now sings with NC band Ama Divers) were coaxed out of retirement for last month’s Hopscotch Music Festival and are now on a short East Coast tour. That includes an NYC show this Friday (10/25) at Glasslands. Historics, Donovan Blanc and DJ Frankie Teardrop are on the bill too and tickets are still available. If you’d like to go for free, we’re giving away a pair of tickets that come with a vinyl copy of Static Crash too.
