Some of you may remember Jarrod Quarrell from late ’00s Australian band, St. Helens. When that band when kaput he started Lost Animal, a mostly solo project where most of the sounds come from his keyboard. Songwriting-wise, Lost Animals’ debut, Ex Tropical, is not that far off what Wolf Parade was doing a decade ago — smoldery, danceable and definitely rock, just with not so much in the way of guitars. You can check out videos for “Lose the Baby” and “Say No to Thugs” below and stream the whole thing via Spotify or Rdio.

Lost Animal are currently in NYC, having played 285 Kent last night with their Hardly Art labelmates Hausu (they played together during CMJ too). They’ve just added another last-minute show tonight (10/25) at new Williamsburg venue Baby’s All Right with Fascinator (stream some songs below), Mother Mask, LIFE (-2) (aka YYYs drummer Brian Chase & Lost Animals bassist Shaggs Chamberlain) and a DJ set from Brian Degraw of Gang Gang Dance. Music starts at 8 PM.

Lost Animal then head to the West Coast for a few shows before going back to Australia. All dates, plus videos and streams, below…
