While we couldn’t be more excited about our own official showcase with Kvelertak, Skeletowitch, Tombs and Psychic Limb aboard the Jewel on 10/22 (tickets, the only boat show during CMJ and Tombs’s only appearance), there are plenty of other noteworthy heavy events that go down this week.
CMJ isn’t exactly thick with heavy music events, so we’ve taken the liberty of expanding a bit to accomodate for punk, hardcore, dark, and anything that experiments with the darker ends of the spectrum. Our guide is below. It encompasses all of the night shows (there are no day events for heavy music, sigh). Check it out….

Villains at Europa (more by BBG)
While BV faves Landmine Marathon are in town supporting Warbringer, and Death is at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the best top-to-bottom showcase goes to Villains, Occultation, Raspberry Bulbs, & Skull at Saint Vitus. Head there for a night of black metal inspired madness.

Trash Talk at BV Day Party in 2009 (more by Jacob Blickenstaff)
If there is one band that wins the “easiest to catch” award, it is definitely Trash Talk. The multi-BV showcase veteran will log FIVE shows in NYC over the course of their CMJ stay, but tonight is their first show at the will-be-wild-to-see-them-at Glasslands. This show and Cake Shop (the next night) will surely be their craziest of the bunch, although seeing Trash Talk in the New Museum on Saturday will definitely be a sight in itself (the show Atlas Sound was just added to).
No particular standout showcase for Wednesday, but favorites like A Place To Bury Strangers, Chelsea Wolfe, and even the new Ministry documentary are all going down that night. The full list of shows is at the end of this post.

You may feel the itch to get your spooky on with White Ring at Saint Vitus or head to Fontana’s to catch Freshkills, but my pick for the evening definitely goes to Cake Shop, as the Life & Death PR showcase will feature Trash Talk, Chelsea Wolfe, and many more including a special guest.

Skeletonwitch at Best Buy Theater (more by Greg Cristman)
Pretty insane lineup at the Ballistic Missle showcase at Public Assembly, featuring names like 400 Blows, XDS, and many more, or you can head to Europa for a taste of Kvelertak and Skeletonwitch before they hit the boat the next evening. The Fucking Wrath and Hull will surely rule at Union Pool as well.

Youth of Today at Chaos in Tejas (more by BBG)
Outside of our own show on Saturday night, Converse is hosting a showcase featuring Youth of Today & Trash Talk plus a gang of Tee Pee-related bands and hip hop crews. If you don’t head to either, make sure and check out Dysrhythmia at Union Pool with East of The Wall.
