Beach Boys co-frontman and Brian Wilson frenemy Mike Love is about to release an entirely inessential solo album featuring reworks of Beach Boys classics and some covers, and in news you just can’t make up, one of those covers is of a Ramones song. (And making things even weirder, Hanson contribute to the album’s rework of 1976’s “It’s OK.”) It’s not news that the Ramones are huge Beach Boys fans and have covered them and took clear influence from them for songs like “Rockaway Beach” (the song Mike Love covers), but who woulda thought The Beach Boys’ most musically conservative member would go on to cover a punk song?
The cover came out last week, and it’s only worth hearing if you’re, like, really, really curious. But then in a move that may spark your curiosity even further, Mike Love performed the song at Long Island’s Paramount on May 30 with Marky Ramone on drums. (The venue, by the way, is about an hour from Rockaway Beach.) Mike Love released an official live video of that performance, and if you’d like to feast your eyes on ears on it, you can do so below.
Mike Love’s new album is called 12 Sides of Summer and due July 19 via BMG. Full tracklist below.
In much more exciting Beach Boys, Brian Wilson is playing songs from Friends and Surf’s Up on tour with The Zombies (who will be playing Odessey and Oracle in full) this summer.
