Ben Gibbard covered Depeche Mode, announces all-Beatles set
Ben Gibbard continued his weekly livestreams tonight, and in addition to playing plenty of Death Cab For Cutie songs (including "Someday You Will Be Loved," which Ben said might be his least favorite song he ever wrote... but also that he's been falling back in love with it), Ben covered Depeche Mode's "The Things You Said" from 1987's Music for the Masses. Ben said "I think it's my favorite song of theirs even though I do not think it's their best song," and he added, "I've always had a soft spot in my heart for all the songs Martin Gore sings." Ben pretty much turned the gothy original into what sounds like a Death Cab song, doing justice to Depeche Mode and making it his own in the process. Watch Ben's set below -- the Depeche Mode cover starts around the 38:44 mark.
Also, some exciting news: Ben revealed that next week's stream will be an all-Beatles covers set. Ben says, "I'm gonna try to stay away from the ones everybody does, I kinda wanna weave you guys through kinda some of my favorite Beatles tunes, which are a little off the... [and then he interrupted himself to respond to a negative comment in the live feed] ...that have a lot of meaning to me personally." He also added, "I highly recommend that you you watch it live because it might not be able to live on the internet for copyright reasons." That one happens Thursday, May 7 at 7 PM ET on the Death Cab YouTube channel.
Each of Ben's shows helps to raise money for a different charity, and this week's benefitted Seattle's Hunger Intervention Program, "a non-profit that is helping make sure food gets on the table for people in need during this time."
